Yeah my dad still eats SOS on occassion... my mom used to make the chipped beef on toast for him when I was still pretty young.

the weird thing is they all whined like frenchmen when they were served it in the military....

then they get out and are all "you know what I could really go for?....really sucky cafeteria food"

All he ever really told me about it was that he was happy to finish a meal as they rarely did... something about if someone raised their heads or looked around during the meal it ended for everyone... It's been awhile since I've talked to him about any of it.

Always got the feeling it was like omg food /nommmmmmm

Edit: Probably just gets ingrained on them at that point...

Saw an episode of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives where they went to a restaurant run by a former Marine who made like, high-quality SOS.

It actually looked really good.

Edit: though I suspect the "classic" version is really not all that great.

The garage frige thing has a practical purpose. Experimental homebrewing, extra beer (little sweetums has actually grabbed an empty beer can out of the trash and took a swig of the bottom slop, BTW!), and even though the big one hasn't made a kill the last two hunting seasons, my dad always has his fall/winter venison care package.

No need to ask dad about venison anymore, but venison...

Mmmm. Venison.

So great it's almost enough to make me go through all the hassle involved.

Almost.

If I had a garage, I'd have a garage fridge.

But I do not. And no room for even an extra small fridge like I used to have.

It's a shame I live so close to Elk County, Pennsylvania.

I mean, I think they'll get upset if they catch me killing them, but...

...they'd have to catch me...

when we were in jackson hole the whole herd was so close to the car I could have done a walk up execution style slaying and then dragged one to the car... I need to bring a machete and a cooler big enough for a couple backstraps next time...

I doubt it would be hard to catch you.

You may be reading too much seriousness into my post.

I'd give myself a 50/50 shot at getting away with it in actual fact, though. The biggest issue is that elk are bigger than deer, and dragging an elk myself when there's no snow would be really tough, and a quad loaded with an elk would be pretty easy to find.

And...really, if I wasn't willing to do the work to get venison, I'm certainly not doing MORE work AND breaking the law for an elk.

Edit: poor folks bagging more than their tag limit isn't really unheard of in my neck of the woods. It's punished, sure. But I'd suspect (though have no solid numbers obviously) it's "missed" under certain circumstances too.

As it should be, really.

Don't forget the marital aid I'd place suspiciously close to your face.

What fun are passed out friends if penises, penis analogs, or penises drawn in Sharpie™ aren't involved?

It's basically just about being where game wardens aren't.

There's a lot of wilderness up there.

You should just drive around aimlessly in the middle of the night for the kill. I think that's what rednecks do in this state. No insurance? Who cares! Supper's on!

They really are.

Louis CK brought this to light to the American public, but yeah...they're *** awful.

"Oh you, you gentle beautiful innocent creatu...

"Hey now little guy, stop eating my garden..."

"Now you're making offense horking noises at me..."

"Hey! HEY! What are you DOING!? YOU'RE RUNNING HEAD FIRST INTO MY CAR!"

It's called "goin' spottin'".

I mean, everyone says you don't take weapons and you just take your spotlight that plugs into the cigarette lighter to scout areas deer hang out for when hunting season starts...

...but yeah. You decide what happens when rednecks go out to look for deer at night with a cooler full of beer in the back.

when I let myself go I was pushing 250 and waddling around like a big fat penguin!

I caught myself in a security camera and thought "who is that fat ***"

*ahem* Mr. Gaffigan aside, I'm really not that out of shape, nor am I precisely what you'd call "rotund".

Heart's healthy. Lungs are healthy. Bloodwork is the definition of normal.

I carry some extra weight about the tum, it's true.

I'd like to lose some weight for the sake of my joints and back as I get older. I suspect I'll get back into my gym routine in the near future. It's been a really bad summer in a lot of ways for me.
