once upon a time we took our infant son to california disney with another young couple like ourselves. Our son was perhaps a year and half old, had no idea what was happening and has no memories of our adventure.

So after a day in the blinding california sun we went to the finest restaurant they have, which at the time was inside a grotto overlooking one of the boat rides. I liked it, it was cool and dark. Elegantly dank.

At some point during the meal I had to change our son's diaper so I took him to the men's room. So coming out of the men's room as I was going in was another young man who I recognized instantly as the soap opera actor Antonio Sabato Jr. also with an equally small child in tow, perhaps a nephew idk. So naturally I asked him if there was a diaper changing station inside the men's room. Because back then diaper changing stations were just coming into wide spread use but for the most part they were inside the women's restrooms only. He fumbled for a second and then sheepishly admitted he hadn't noticed if there was one in there...

Anywho, there was no changing table and I had to use the counter. So business completed I returned to the table and later in the meal my wife's friend mentions that sometimes celebrities visit the restaurant we are in and I said "oh yeah, I don't know if he qualifies as a celebrity... but I ran into that Antonio Sabato Jr. guy coming out of the men's room" which excited her greatly. First she wanted to know where he was and I said I didn't notice where he went, I was going to the restroom. then she couldn't believe I didn't mention it sooner. "Well did you say anything to him" she queried.. "yeah, I asked him if there was a baby changing station inside the men's room."

So at this point her brain was reeling and she couldn't believe I didn't ask for an autograph or something. Which is something I have always wondered about.... What in the hell do people even do with an autograph? Why would you want one? Why would you bother someone you don't know and never met and doesn't know you for their signature on a piece of paper? Are you going to forge checks later?....

So my half of the conversation was about the nature of autographs and she was still stuck on the idea that she was in the same restaurant with Antonio Sabato Jr. and incredulous that I hadn't gotten some proof I met him or brought him back to our table and that my one note of conversation was whether or not there was a diaper changing station inside the men's room.

But that was the one and only question on my mind at that point in time, had I ran into a waitress on the way there I would have asked her the same thing. He was the first person I ran into that I thought might know the answer to a question I had. It could have been anybody. I didn't "meet" him I bumped into him on the way to the bathroom and I cared as much as my son did.

So I finally convinced her that he was probably there with his family and didn't want to be bothered by her or me or anyone else, we weren't at the (award show for soap operas) we were in a restaurant for christsakes, inside of a family theme park. When she sufficiently calmed down I pointed him out to her. Thankfully, she didn't make a scene or throw herself at him, she hyperventilated for a little while but we made it out of there without her fainting or doing anything weird....

The only reason I remember it at all is because of her reaction. Since then I have met famous people from all walks of life, artists, musicians, actors, politicians, presidents of corporations and I never had that sense, that she had that day, that somehow I was in the presence of greatness or anything. They all just seemed like normal people to me, idk maybe my celebrity appreciation mechanism is malfunctioning.... /shrug
