Well, 6 is still my all time favorite but 7 is still a stellar game on it's own. Granted, from the fanbase point of view, it'll likely be on the top of the pyramid, including in the sales chart. However, in my opinion, FF is on a very steady and readily noticeable decline in quality ever since (dare I say?) 10. It's understandable that he sees the demand for a remake as a desperate act to return to their former glory, but in doing so would ultimately bury yourself and the future of creative intentions that will likely never see the light of day. But I think rather than slowly drag out the franchise with diminishing quality like it has been for the past 10 years or so, they may as well go out with a bang and just give us one last awesome remake.

See, back when their platform was the NES & SNES, their capacity for just about everything, most notably storage capacity was very limited. So they had to somehow make up for that shortage with creative and replay value. And they honestly pulled it off, they made awe inspiring soundtracks, creative and exciting stories, protagonists and antagonists worth giving a damn about, and more. But with this new higher bar of technology, it seems that their leeway has widened so drastically that they have passively fallen back on superficial qualities more so than internal ones.
Allegory is not something that can be explained or demonstrated through posts, as it varies in significance per individual, but I wish SE would muster up some self restraint and go back to the days of combating (now invisible) limitations with something extraordinary and creative, rather than the vapid eye candy they keep regurgitating over and over.
Edit: As far as the "peak" goes, I'll agree that 7 was the height of the franchise in terms of considering quality and sales. However, as far as quality and creative integrity, I would say everything up to the year 2000 was their peak (FF9/Chrono Cross).

It was the first to introduce roots to a very pagan/wiccan set of beliefs. Something that struck a chord with me more so than most, so for personal reasons it was still relatively strong. However, the problem with 7 was that their explanations were chopped up and scattered pretty badly, hence the constant spin offs. Which I don't mind too badly, as long as they're legitimately answered instead of leaving us in the dark.
I suppose the moral of the story is: Casuals win.

It's funny. When I first played and beat 10, I hated it. It felt like the whole thing was summed up with a bittersweet deus ex machina. Like it was Bobby Ewing meets Final Fantasy. It was pitiful and alienating to me at the time, but in retrospect and given another replay, and for once not taking it so damn seriously, 10 had values no other FF held until then, in that it for once set aside the melancholy and morose glum throughout the game and protagonist and gave a cheerful and hopeful disposition, and actually made you feel like you could make a difference in a world that was perpetuating an endless cycle of death and misery. I have to give it credit where credit is due.
However, the whole godzilla reincarnated with the dream BS is still pushing my buttons and moving me the wrong way.
