i like some bands that hit the mainstream level, but in the terms that I see it they don't fit "my" qualifier as to what mainstream would be just due to the emotional clarity displayed in teh musics.

Yes, the possibility of the latter tends to be more true than not.
Record companies tend to want to extend the reach of their influence over what their contract holders do for the sake of higher sales. Very rarely do I see a mainstream artist that legitimately fits in the field without having $_$ in their eyes so to speak when releasing newer works.

if they get a hold of a song you like they will *** it out until you don't recognize it anymore!
I actually kinda liked myspace back in the day when it opened the doors to potential like minded artists. But unfortunately many were just mediocre filler looking to get noticed, and more often than not, wanting to get noticed for the money ;/
But really I think the whole mainstream concept is similar to the power of observation. The way you think, act, behave and compose yourself (especially in a line of work) with the circumstance of audience (in masses) changes everything. Hell, even in physics the pattern of observation changes a lot more than we'd think.
