Question for all the people going to college: Depending what you're majoring in, won't your job most likely get filled by someone who doesn't have a degree because they can pay them less than you?

Yes and No. All depends on the job, take for instance a chemical engineer. I highly doubt they would be hireing anyone without a degree in this field.

Why?

look how you talk, you think you know everything and ur so right. You said I have to read the wall of text cuz I need to know, who says I don't know or want to be lectured by some know it all? I'm not gunna waste anymore time talking to someone like you.

Prove me wrong then. Instead of dismissing my viewpoints, make a counterargument and prove me wrong. For all I know, I could be completly wrong about everything I said, but because I was given the wrong information, I think I'm right.

Although, I still think I'm right because I looked at the numbers, I seen the trends, and I can predict what is going to happen based on past experiences in today's society. Tell me why you think its going to go another way and we can talk about it.

Yeah, I see a company hiring an accounting manager who doesn't have an accounting degree, a management degree, and experience with managing people, and the know-how into the laws and regulations in today's business world. Yeah, a bum on the street can make a better CFO right away than me atm.

I said depending on the major. There's a lot of good jobs out there that don't require a degree of any kind.

A degree in this case shows that you have a strong work-ethic and the commitment into doing your job and doing it right.

That is what employers are looking for in this case.

In the IT world, it is possible for someone with a degree can get trumped by some supernerd who dropped outta high school because he wasn't "challenged" enough(but this happens in most majors, except the gay artsy ones).

IT is a lot broader than most people think. Not only do you need the technical skills to solve the problems, but you also need people skills to talk to your clients(who are users and in the IT World, users are *** stupid).

There are kids in my class who are super smart in computer code/network admin/blahblahblah, but ***their pants when they have to do a presentation in front the class, and vice versa.

I have to disagree, and heres why.

An associates degree in this day and age just shows that you went to school and passed general classes.

A bachelors degree shows that you took the next step in school and were decisive enough to pick a major, doesn't fully show a good work ethic, but does somewhat show a commitment.

A doctorate can be looked two ways, one you were not ready to enter the working society and start a job instead you stayed in school, also can be looked at for a very strong commitment in your line of studies, and the ability to follow through what you start.

All of these can be debated, but from my experience a an employee and more so as an employer these tend to be true statements.

Edit: I just realized i didn't fully disagree, but there is tiers to the degrees.

I have to force this ***down your throats because, guess what, other's have forced information down your throats already. The thing is, you like the information that was forced down your throats earlier because it was sugar-coated with misinformation. I have to waken you up by giving you true, hard, ***tasting information so you can see the world around you today.

This information isn't sweet, but its true, because it can be proven over and over again. We are walking down a path to destruction, but some people has caught it early enough to keep it from doing damage if we act quickly.

Do you want another Great Depression to happen? You don't even know how bad it was, and neither do I. I have read what sort of impact it has happened, and although it did bring out the best in people socialwise, it was horrible for us economicwise, and it had to take a war of unimaginable scale to take us out of that depression. Do you honestly want that to happen?

Well said, Korpg.

I'm only going to add one quote to this:

"Reject the basic assumptions of civilization, especially the importance of material possessions."

Wrong. I'm all for material possessions. Thats proof that you are who you are. I'm not going to tell anyone to shread your credit cards and go live in a forest. I'm going to tell everyone to work hard at what you do best, create wealth, buy ***, and help strenghten this economy.

To me it's more about priorities and being happy with what you've got. If you buy something, but it because you want it. Don't buy it just because it's what's expected.

case in example: My house. My dad thinks it's a piece of crap and that I should purposely let it get foreclosed on. To me it's my first home (that I own, I mean), and it's more than sufficient for my needs. If it suits my needs why get rid of it? Because it's not worth what I paid for it anymore? It's not THAT much lower, if at all. I got it below what it was worth when I bought it two years ago anyway. I was looking for a home, not something to worry about profit on many years down the road.

This depends on where you want to work.

If you want to work for a small company (either sole propriatorship or small corporation) then your statements would be true.

If you want to work for a medium-sized to large-sized company, then my statement would be true, because these companies have an HR department who's 1 major consern involves retention. They aren't going to hire you because of the size of your breasts or because of your High School GPA, they are going to hire you if you are going to stay there for a long time. Thats all companies want from an employee, loyality.

I'm in the IT world. Haven't been to college. Fortunately, my time in the military (still IT) as well as the praise I received from previous managers got me this job immediately. I didn't even have an interview.

It all comes down to being your best at what you do (like Korpg mentioned). I still have Marine officers that request me by name when they have a problem, and whenever there's a problem the Marines in the comm shop can't fix they'll call me down at my civilian office for help.

done tooting my own horn. Wasn't the point of this post.

(almost forgot, my colleague sitting across from me started online college courses AFTER getting this job)

This is why I respect you as a human, not as a robot. You and I have different viewpoints, not the same one stream of 01001111011. Your priorities are values, mine are wealth.

You want to hold what you own. You want to improve on what you got.

I want to give out wealth to others. I want us all to be richer.

Your post is a very good learning tool for others to draw upon, and I hope they see it that way because, like Pikachu has pointed out, its the way I type.

Korpg please choose your words wisely. If you feel the need to address issues you'd like to discuss then do so in a proper manner. Forcing us to talk about the issues you want us to is making you look like the bum running around saying the end is near.

We may have voted these past elections, but all candidates are giving false promises just so they can make choices not fully approved by the majority. Indirectly the majority voted for these people to be in the positions they are so that means we all approve of his choices. That isn't good enough for me. So to bluntly say I don't care what is going means there's nothing that can be done to change what already has and I believe "we" have to deal with the rollercoster ride. Politics is nothing more than running a test and either like/dislike the outcome. Every 4 years we get the option to the changes based on that outcome.

I personally don't like to get into politics because no one is 100% correct and it's all about personal opinions.
