the most bloated defense budget in the world, & somehow meeting with another superpower makes us weak?
I don't think so.

I mean we can argue which country is worse but frankly the idea that the US isn't engaging in some of the same things that make Russia such an inhospitable place to freedom loving individuals is laughable and we're only moving further in that direction. In the world of geopolitics, Russia is one of the few nations the US can't kick sand at when it pleases and it annoys them to no end. The US is annoyed that Snowden got granted asylum and due to the already increased tensions between nations has decided to 'punish' Russia by canceling the meet 'n greet. Russia won't share its candy with the US so the US is taking its ball and going home. Take that commies! Manning let out a ***load of information that did in fact compromise security abroad and messed with foreign relations... Good intentions do not make an act good... even in the trial they admit that he released many things that he shouldn't have... Arresting and breaking up protests? Are you talking about protests in the US? There are plenty of protests that go on all the time with no interruption... Hell there are some every week that I used to watch from the window in my building... People who are arrested at protests in the US are usually released pretty quickly and its usually for doing something stupid not just protesting... or things get out of hand though there have been some pretty shitty acts committed by cops... I'm personally not aware of anyone being arrested for a substantial period of time for simply protesting though I could be wrong on that... In the immortal words of Lee Ving....

The corrected version of that is that some southern politicians do want to pass laws that would imprison, detain or oppress gays.
Politicians are elected by people so on some level the people feel the same way. Of course that doesn't mean everyone wants to but the most fevered Bible beating morons don't elect themselves and Rick Santorum wasn't a bad, diarrhea induced dream. Siren.Flavin said: » not to mention... do you think that the chinese or more likely the russian government hasn't had a chance to "examine" the hardware he's brought with him? For all we know they could already have a copy of all the information he brought a long with him... information that he himself said shouldn't be released... though at this point thats all speculation so yeah... I think you misunderstand me and I don't know if I even understand what you're getting at but Im not talking about examining a computer so they can build that computer themselves... I'm talking about taking everything Snowden had with him and making copies of it so they have all the information that Snowden stole from the US government... Information that they should not have... Siren.Flavin said: » I've never heard anything about that so I can't say for sure or not... I would think that would be pretty big news if that were the case too... Edward Snowden, a good case of:
Do the means justify the ends or do the ends justify the means? I can't wait to see who plays him in the inevitable movie that will result from this. If Julian Assange can get one, then dammit Snowden can get 90 mins of screentime! Drjones said: » Siren.Flavin said: » I've never heard anything about that so I can't say for sure or not... I said I was not aware that they were attempting to kill him... Do you have proof that this did as much? Because Snowden himself said that while he did not discount that it is a possibility that he saw no evidence at this time that they had made an attempt on his life... I mean unless you have information that I don't have that they did this... I'm not saying that you're wrong. I'm just saying that there's a difference in severity of moral lapses between Russia and the United States. It's not fair to ignore this. Morality is an opinion anyway, so the debate is pointless.

It would require dissecting both nations and making subjective assessments of actions each nation has taken. There are certain issues I think we're ahead of Russia on like general daily human rights for citizens and overall freedoms. Take things up to the governmental level and it gets hazy quick. I just felt it was unfair to toss out 'human rights violations!' or 'arming regimes!' on Russia like some great moral judgment when the US clearly skirts rule of law, human rights and regimes as it sees fit. Things are quite a bit more complex than a good/bad judgment here. Hypocrisy runs rampant on both sides. Not quoting and editing down that whole post on my offer. It's directly above my post he quoted.

I see no point. we would have done exactly the same thing had snowden been a russian national tattling on them. keeping a dialog going with other superpowers in just as beneficial to us as it is to them, throwing a temper tantrum over a problem that we created makes us look stupid, imo. "We can't let their ego eclipse ours!" is exactly how wars get started rather than rational people hashing things out at the treaty table even if they don't really like eachother much.
America has enough phallic shaped missiles to be secure about itself. We aren't going to look weak unless the army we go up against is a ragtag militia of religiously and economically motivated irregulars. Then perhaps things get murky and that's only because we have issues with leveling entire civilian populations. One reason the 21st century trumps previous centuries of warfare as hellish as warfare is already. The notion that we could 'look weak' is hilarious though. Yeah man, all those F-22s, Aircraft Carriers, ICBMs and nukes make us look soooooooo weak. All we need at this point is an ion cannon that rains death from space. Siren.Mosin said: » Phoenix.Meektaru said: » Absolutely it does. Russia did this in spite of our requests. Why give them what they want? Make their ego a little bigger? I see no point. Not saying we haven't turned spies or taken in political dissidents, though I don't know much at all about it, but we've dealt with them before on this... and they've done the same to us... so I mean... it's not that surprising to see this happen... Beyond all that just because we might do the same or its been done before isn't an excuse to do nothing when it happens... not only that but this is highly publicized as well... to take a hit and do nothing is foolsih as well.. The idea is that this hurts Russia a lot more than it does us by not showing up to the meeting... I think we both lose anytime political leaders refuse to sit down and have diplomatic discussions no matter how fruitless it may seem. The more often two parties meet, the greater the chances some progress could be made.
Demained already! *** yeah!!!
that's what we get for not agreeing with everything everyone says.
