So, an small update from me since I know I have neglected to update the guide.
Between being completely engrossed into XIV and being unable to study a lot of XI content due to real life work kicking me in the keister, I regret to inform everyone that updating the guide is on hold indefinitely.
In my completely and utterly biased opinion, this is still one of the most comprehensive resources for new and veteran WHMs and I feel a lot of theory presented in this guide will stay relevant till time immemorial (okay, maybe not THAT long, but I imagine for quite a while!) While the gear sets will not be updated, this is still a great resource for everything else.
I will entertain any questions via PM if so desired, though my eye on this thread will probably be more lax (as already demonstrated) than before.
It's been a pleasure, and if times change and I can put my focus back on this guide, I shall do so.
Signed, a Galka Melee White Mage

If you find you cannot maintain this, could you not find a collaborator or two to keep the node edited? Just a thought.

If anyone is masochistic enough to go through my like, 80+ gear sets in the guide + sift through all the information, go for it xD My thought process is kinda incomprehensible at times, so I dunno if anyone wants the task of discerning my brain, honestly ^^;...
You're welcome, I appreciate the support from everyone for all this ^^

I am blessed that I was able to play alongside you in XI before we made our home in XIV. You remain a healing legend to me as we continue on with our new virtual lives in Eorzea. I believe your advice and words will serve well to any future healers for a long time to come.

Whm can use espial, and from what I've seen it has better dd stats.
Edit: wait, what? Why was this on the front page if the last post is 36 days old o_O

Edit: wait, what? Why was this on the front page if the last post is 36 days old o_O There's a post right above yours that is from today.
Espial beats Wayfarer in STR, mostly (head and hands have better alternatives than either so I'm leaving those out):
(Espial - Wayfarer)
body 22-20
legs 27-24
feet 10-9
But Wayfarer does much better in MND, which is mostly what you want for Realmrazer (sorry Hexa) anyway:
(Wayfarer - Espial)
body 28-22
legs 22-16
feet 18-10
More MND + not a huge loss of STR + MND being more useful for WHM for spells in general = Wayfarer for me (despite its hideous appearance).
Espial does have accuracy, but it's not a huge amount and if you're using a ~200+ level club and sushi you probably don't need the extra accuracy.
And frankly I'm overfull on WHM as is so I couldn't be bothered to buy a different set that has a negligible (IMO) difference from what I am using now.

Got annoyed with my capped inventory and set out to replace my existing cure precast and generic precast sets. The set below lets me finally ditch Cure Clogs, Aceso Choker, Pahti Cape, and Genbu's Shield.
It doubles as a generic precast set for all other spells as well, swapping out Impatiens/Ogapepo Cape for Incantor Stone/Swith Cape +1.
For curing the set has 60% FC in gear + 20% in merits = 80% FC cap (+11% occ. quickens spellcast for the Gearswap users).
Any suggestions for improvement (besides the obvious Chelona or Ogapepo +1)? The goal is to utilize every piece for more then one set and give me some inventory -1 wherever possible.
ItemSet 319260
Thanks!

Thanks for the test Proth. Cursna's always been one of the things that's bugged me in the game and I'm glad someone got around to this very minor (albeit extremely annoying) aspect of the game.
I've updated the Cursna section a little to reflect your findings just for completions sake.
If I were to take a guess at it, my very rough and completely untested napkin math would guess 25 skill = 1% success with a base success rate of 5% at 0 healing magic skill.
This is based upon the numbers you've given 68 skill - 15 skill = 53 skill to create a +/- 2% change, then backwards calculate a base value of that [ (424 + 15) / 25 ] = 17.56 = + / - 22% - 5% as per your first test. I imagine the decimals are floored as well. Of course, further testing would be required.
I appreciate you taking the time to look at it ^^

Hello, I don't know if it already been said, but it seems that, either fastcast gear, or curespellcast - gear is not working if you macro them in at the start of the spell, then swap to potency.
I tested quickly my curaga III spellcasting time, with a "precast" macro, wait 1, potency gear. I found 4s, that's a lot.
I tested with all my precast gear without swaping to potency, and it dropped to 1, or 2s max.
Maybe my ISP or the server are too slow. I'm using windower scripts as macros FYI.
By Spiraboo 2014-02-12 05:44:14
I might be mis-understanding you but if you don't switch to potency gear and just cure in precast it procs?
That sounds to be that fastcast gear is working, it's just your macro is broken?

Is there any pieces of relic or af +2 thats worth doing for whm? Get the legs, without question.
Body if you use Regen.
The 109/119 AF/relic head pieces have cure casting time on them.

Are we not going to talk about the hands? Theophany mitts +1, if you are already capped cure potency are stunning healing hands. Hard to make up 17 healing magic skill (excluding body) in multiple other slots. Should get them made first.
If you use and have a regen set like me, you will want to upgrade the AF legs also. So empy hands/relic body/AF reforged legs for max regens.
The main reason to upgrade relic body though is on the off chance the +1 gets +3/tick refresh. Making it the only 3tick refresh body for WHM.

Always forget about marduk's tiara! D:
Note: The guide will not be updated at this time due to personal real life commitments. My completely biased opinion is that this guide is still an incredible resources for any WHM, aspiring or not, and the majority of the theory presented in this guide will most likely remain appropriate for many years to come. Item sets have not been updated since August 17, 2013.

Part 1 - Introduction - “So… I hear you enjoy healing!”
White Mages are masters and mistresses of the healing arts. No class in the game can heal as quickly, efficiently, and effectively as a White Mage. With defensive job abilities and traits, the most powerful Cures, several status recovering methods, and a wide variety of enhancing magic - it is difficult to compete with a White Mage on the defensive scale. If fast paced spike heals and a challenge to keep your allies alive and unhindered in even the most desperate of situations is your cup of tea, than White Mage is for you.
White Mages is one of those classes where you are more dependent on your knowledge and your wits than you are in your gear. Does this mean gear is less important for a White Mage? Not at all, but a lack of gear can be made up with quick reflexes and prior knowledge to an encounter. It doesn’t matter if you have the best gear in the world if you do not realize that one of your party members is petrified thanks to a Rock Smash from an opposing troll or if your entire offensive line is paralyzed thanks to a potent Roar from a tiger. Not only are there reactive measures, there are also preventative measures a White Mage can employ. You see that notorious monster readying a highly damaging Area of Effect attack? Prepare that Curaga IV and watch as your parties HP goes from red back to white in an instant.
Where a White Mage truly shines is in large scale melees with huge spike numbers. White Mages are capable of revitalizing your entire front line by themselves, and with a little support can keep up that scale of healing indefinitely.
In this guide, you will find a comprehensive review of many of the spells and abilities White Mages bring to table. Included in this review are optimized gear sets as well as good and easier to acquire alternatives for some equipment.
As a disclaimer, the majority of this guide is written from my own personal experience and knowledge as playing a White Mage as my only job for the majority of my FFXI career. There are different playstyles and some may be more suitable for an individual than others. I wish to present this guide in a way where it can provide players with insight and knowledge that may otherwise be hard to find or located in an obscure part of cyberspace. How an individual wishes to apply this knowledge afterwards, it is up to them. I hope you enjoy this guide!
