Scary movies?
The Exorcist is THE original scary movie. Let the Right One In is good/creepy...

I find that the environment you watch them in is at least half of what makes them scary. For instance I saw "The Ring" in the theaters when it first came out, and had been hyped for months. It was so intense and the fact that the theater was full and everyone else was on the edge of their seat made it so much more so. Someone mentioned "Paranormal Activity" earlier in the thread. If you decide to watch it I would recommend doing so alone or at least in total silence with your partner. It may not be freaky but it has staying power and you'll definitely be paranoid afterwards for quite some time. "28 days later" was pretty scary if you haven't seen it, but again its all about the environment you watch it in. My asian horror movie collection consists of:
* Cello * Marebito * Cinderella * Bloody Reunion * A Tale of Two Sisters * The Red Shoes and * Wishing Stairs If you don't mind reading subs, enjoy. Edit: I also found one called Hansel & Gretel on Netflix a few weeks ago. It's pretty creepy. Dead Birds
*** up movie most japanese horror movies are good, they dont over do the special effects like hollywood ones so they tend to be creeper and more realistic.
caught one called Reincarnation the other night on tv. has sorta a M, Night Shamalamadingdong feel to it <pre suck, ie: six sence> but its realy good and alot better than his *** <even a twist ending lol> Jacob's Ladder is a personal favourite, although it isnt so much scary as it is a mindfuck. It does have the creepy factor about it.
there was a recent movie I watched that actually got me frightened, i forget its name, but his house was essentially haunted - and it kind of goes into a Poltergeist thing where he enters the ghost world to find his daughter or something. that ghost world was particularly frightening to me, as its somehow what i would imagine such ghost worlds to look like. that being said, im pretty secular, and do not believe in such riffraff. I'm not a fan of scary movies for basically the same reason kali listed, it's not scary if it just doesnt make sense, and also what Nausi said, you just can't get into it if you have someone with you talking through it asking "why did the bad man die?" or "where did the pretty blonde go?" or screaming "Noooo don't go there!"

The only type of person I dislike more than that is someone that exposes every bit of a movie as you're watching it with them since they've seen it before or someone clapping/yelling randomly throughout a movie in a theater. We live in a world where people would die without their cell phones. Ahhh Insidious. Wonder what or who possessed me to watch that

May as well have said 'Versus' or 'Battle Royale'. Even though "Kitty-kitty-kitty," or whatever it was she uttered during the needle scene made me shiver, I don't think it was the worst of the worst. You should watch 'American Horror Story'! Good Stuff!!! And some Zachary Quinto! American Horror Story was good last season. If you're not into the more cheesy wtf horror, you won't like this season. :| A lot of the "J-horror" originals are good though. The Eye(2002 version if you look it up) is a good example. The new one was decent but I think in the end it wasn't as creepy, just more flash. :< Edit~ Bahamut.Vagrua said: » * A Tale of Two Sisters I've watched some J horror though none of the ones mentioned. It didn't do it for me honestly. I think I've seen the jap version of the grudge and... one called white? something about a j-pop group killing members off cuz they all wanted to be the main singer. yeah.... no -_-

Really? That movie creeped people out? This is the movie where I was so bored in the theater, that when she's standing in the kitchen and there's someone behind her(this isn't a spoiler, how many movies does this happen in!?), she doesn't notice and it goes on for so soooo long. I got irritated and yelled "TURN AROUND, ***" and everyone in the theater laughed instead of telling me to stfu. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Movie. <.> ...To each their own of course, I'm just really shocked, lol. :D Valefor.Angeluzun said: » I've watched some J horror though none of the ones mentioned. It didn't do it for me honestly. But I'll take it over black and white twitching ghost children (all American j horror).
Hidden but read it anyways. If you really want to be scared. You have been warned lmao!

I'm self-conscious about laughing/being scared at different parts of the movie than other viewers. The only movie that I've found to really frighten me, though I couldn't say why was Quarantine That movie made me frightened to enter apartment buildings for a loooong time. The original Texas chainsaw massacre, the one that came out in the 70's. It was based on true events. The Shining was weird but not real scary.
My mind is going blank, if i think of the ohters i will post them. Shiva.Moogleking said: » The original Texas chainsaw massacre, the one that came out in the 70's. It was based on true events. I found that film frightening because of the idea that the entire town was down with him killing people. To be quite honest, I can't see it being any worse than Faces of Death. That ***can be too much to watch.
This is mostly self mutilation.. i guess it can be called? I don't even know.. They don't die and they extremely enjoy it..
I think part of what we determine what is scary ourselves is our own fears.
One of the fears I have is mirrors. Not that I'm scared to use them, would be incredibly silly, but if I'm not looking does it really follow my actions or is it still staring at me. It's a silly fear, but I enjoy being scared by it and I like that some movies have been bringing it up recently. I don't really get scared of movies with spiders or insects, I might get grossed out but I don't consider that being the same as fear. Gore movies are more shocking than anything, I don't consider that fear either. |
