so after not logging in after a while, decided to log in, but my controller did not work when I did so....
Currently using a PS2 controller adapter, and I did verify that such controller works, tested it in the Control Panel settings, it registers fine. tested it on other games, works fine. works fine on POL, it is recognized on POL settings, however FFXI nor FFXI Settings seem to recognize my gamepad...
what has changed since then?
-FFXI updated
-Installed another gamepad, but it was removed afterwards (depending on the game, I switch between ps2 or xbox controller, usually leaving one plugged in at a time causes no issue before)
:/ haalp?

There might be some slim possibility of a driver conflict going on from the new controller you installed?
Just sounds weird that your PS2 controller works on everything else, unless it's like an issue similar to people with Logitechs would have. There's a setting for direct input IE regular gamepads on the back, and a switch that changes it to register as a 360 controller, which XI would never read at all for me. Everytime I had it setup as a 360 controller it'd just act as the controller wasn't there at all for me, so I'd have to shut the game down and then switch back to direct input mode and restart to have it work again.
Dunno if any of that will help you, but good luck!

yeah it is weird.
what I'm thinking is, FFXI switched to the new device, and it wont revert back?
unlike POL setup, there is no "use this gamepad", but as soon as I unplugged the other controller, it should have reverted back to normal like usual... :/

XI remembers IDs, I think you have to go to the device manager and remove them manually, I'm not certain though as I've never had to do it.

Worst case scenario you might want to look into using keyboard mapping software like Xpadder. And this is a long shot, but try running FFXI as administrator.

I don't know what type of Windows OS you are using, Misao, but I'll try to help.
Before starting this make sure you shut down PlayOnline completely.
First thing to try is connect the controller you want to use FFXI with to the PC and disconnect all others.
Then mark the USB port you connected it to and aways connect it there. (That helps with the controller not changing it's ID later on)
After that, go to control panel and open the "Game Controllers" window. I think on newer windows OSes it got changed a bit but should still be there.
At the said window, highlight the controller and push the "Advanced..." button. Another window with a pulldown menu will appear. It selects the prefered game controoler for all applications. Make sure you select it.
Exit all game controller windows then open FFXI settings on the start menu. Test the controller buttons. They should work properly and the game should remember the assigned buttons. If the buttons are wrong you can fix now.
After everything is to your liking, save settings and exit the configuration program. Start PlayOnline, log into FFXI and test.
Have fun !
I wish I could play, but my Internet is on strike. I can use it for 5 minutes then it disconnects and reconnects. No point on even trying to play if it's like this -_-;

I assume you did the basics and went to XIConfig and it was still checked off to use a gamepad? Maybe it got reset in the update?

I started having problems with my controller today. @_@ For some reason today my receiver for the wireless controller (360)started giving me the "Power Surge On Hub Port" error. I've restarted all USB ports and such, but get the error when I plug it in again. Not sure what the deal is.

Sadly it sounds like your receiver is having either hardware or software issues. I think it could have a short circuit on the USB cable if you move it a lot or put pressure on the cable by bending it. Check if the cable has any signs of damage ...

Well, it looks like I'll have to make a trip to get a new receiver or a brand new controller. And, yeah I checked the cable and it has a small bend in it. Thanks for the info. ^^;

Make sure you select it. using Win7 and yeah, managed to do this. even when not plugged in, the new device was set as default, changed it to the USB Ps2 gamepad.

After everything is to your liking, save settings and exit the configuration program. Start PlayOnline, log into FFXI and test. All I could do on FFXI settings, was toggle gamepad on-off. pressing buttons to try and reconfigure would not trigger a change, and test gamepad didnt work as well. sadly, there is no option to toggle which gamepad to use on FFXI settings, but there is one on POL settings? wat.

I'm not knowledgeable with the ps2 adapter, but if you have money I would totally recommend buying a Logitech F510, it works flawlessly for me and no need for any type of third party programs.

while not my pic, thates the one I have.
Got the adapter 3 days after FFXI came out for pc. uses generic gamepad driver, so no software or special driver needed. been trough 5 computers since then and still works good. only had the gamepad itself replaced multiple times due to wear and tear.
so after not logging in after a while, decided to log in, but my controller did not work when I did so....
