The real question is why don't they add a "Recycle Bin" or "Trash Can" that holds the last few items that you threw away? Then you could retrieve these items whenever you wanted, until they were replaced with more items that you tossed. Terraria, an indie game had this feature.
The time and money it would take to write the code for it would outweigh heavily all of the GM calls about missing items.

While you can easily argue "be careful what you buy" - this is a pretty blatant/obvious scam/intent to scam, and imo is something that SE should step in about. A few ban/temp bans of people doing this, and I'm sure it'd stop really quickly.
Don't misunderstand; I'm not condoning this behavior, it's just an incredibly stupid and avoidable mistake to make. I can only be so upset with someone maliciously handing you a bag of glass shards labeled "Glass Shards" saying, " here, have some candy."

I've made the mistake of buying 2 1 byne bills as 2 100 byne bills. The difference is a slight off color and 100.
I sent tells to the mule for the money back, talked to GM, and then bitched at the player. Moved on.
Just a scam ploy. GM's can't do anything about it. Just be careful what you purchase and trade with people.

As with most things, it depends entirely on who answers your call and what kind of a mood they're in. This is technically punishable under the TOS, but you're not always going to get GMs who care enough to do something about it.

From what I understand, 1 time rollbacks are for stolen/hacked accounts in which SE has to run an investigation and verify there was illegal intrusion. They make you sign some forms and provide identification and if it goes through, rolls back to what ever date they last saved
If everyone lost an item regardless what it was due to player's fault or glitch in the system (when the GM says working as intended), they would be overwhelmed with requests and wouldn't be able to draw lines.
On the other hand, I don't see the problem for the SE team to your back your account as your one time restore. It's not like you can trade away r/e items and gain a profit from it.
Best of luck.
They don't make you sign any forms, whoever told you that?

I'd go over the GM's head by requesting an SGM and asking for the Lv75 version completes since they know you've already aquired it to begin with.

Pretty much >_>
Like I said in OP, I was fairly certain I was on/tossing the Gaxe. When I saw this in my log, I was just kinda like "... the ***....just.. happened...................?"
After that, it was just kinda like a mental:
From what I've heard/read I'm a little optimistic that even if they can only restore the Lv90 version, I'll still be able to upgrade it. At this point I'm just glad I didn't turn in any marrows yet, cause I know there's no way in hell I'd get those reiumbursed :/

lolwat.
So they can restore a shitty empyrean weapon which can be ground out in a day or two ... but can't do it to a relic weapon which takes time, lots of time...
mmmhmmm and they wonder why they are losing too many customers...

I was told by someone a few months back that after completing their amano trial, unsure which, but a trial had been done on it, they accidentally tossed it while trying to toss random junk they'd gotten through the trial. They said they called a GM immediately and the amano was returned to them almost immediately, so I'm fairly certain you just need to keep asking and find someone who will return it to you. All GMs are different, despite what SE tries to tell you. Some are ***, some will actually help you. Just keep GMing it.
The amano was returned to them with the trial still completed. If my memory serves, it was the 85 version, but I could be wrong.

So they either change policies weekly, the gm I was talking to was a ***, or he just didn't know what he was talking about.
In all my previous conversations with a GM, they straight flat out just told me no until I confronted them with the fact that I knew of other people that had had relics and empyreans restored. Then suddenly it was "well we can restore the Lv90 version, but.."
I really don't understand FFXI gms. It's like they're actually going out of their way to be unhelpful jerks. At this point, I've done 4 GM calls and yet to have heard from a SGM. Part of me wants to keep bugging them, but I worry that being annoying isn't going to help my case any, then I worry that while they're taking their sweet time deciding if/when they wanna help me, the logs are gonna be gone and it'll just be a HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE line of "too much time has passed and we can't verify that you owned it" :/
Is there an email channel that I can spam them with emails that's not just the Customer Support online form thing?

And yeah, that really annoyed me. If it was in the wrong forum, why not just move it instead of locking it :| I don't use the OF much and maybe I'm just blind as a bat, but I didn't see a user suggestion area, so I wasn't really sure where to put it.

The GM system in FFXI is possibly the worst in-game support I've ever seen in the past ~17 years I've been on the internet.
Even the immortals (unpaid coders/GMs) in the MUD I used to play were more helpful than GMs in FFXI, and a lot of those people were real ***.
The GM system is just broken. Always has been. I have zero GM calls ever because I've never seen one actually help a friend with anything; only further frustrate them or, at best, say "Sorry, we really can't do anything" and LEAVE.
Edit for anecdotal story: Many years ago, the wife once had three or four items completely dissapear out of her inventory whilst in Dynamis (her Joyeuse and a few other smaller items). She was absolutely distraught (this was back when a Joyeuse was hot ***and it was her most prized possession). She called a GM, they essentially said "try logging on/off and see if it comes back, but there's nothing we can do."
This was before the rollback/item restore policy. They were content with items just going away and them not doing anything about it.
If it had been a relic -- especially at that time -- I would have stopped playing right then and there.
Granted this instance actually is user error, but within context of their current policies, there's zero reason they can't restore it exactly as it was.
Useless ***.
+1 for playing MUDs!

I'm sorry cali, I tried. Apperantly you aren't even allowed to find out relics are not restorable until you drop one, so I couldn't even attempt to logic him.
I'm trying to find a similar item to drop and recall, but I cant find anything that has magian data but no "augmented" tag(to make it similar to a relic).

So, just finished talking with a SGM. At the end he just kinda stopped talking to me, not sure if he's just really busy and left, and not sure if he's working on the restoration now or if it's gonna take a few days.
Basically, they'll give me back the Lv90 version. They're not sure if I can upgrade it from there, but if not, he said they'll help me out somehow more after, by presumably restoring the Lv75 version (and hoping that one doesn't have problems with trials as well).

Not sure how long the restoration is gonna take. If I don't hear anything within a few days, I guess I'll poke at a gm again.
Just wanted to say thanks to all the people that offered their support, on here and through PMs and tells, etc. Sorry if I didn't get a chance to respond to you individually.

Yay!
beautiful! I was hoping this thread would come to a happy conclusion.
So, I debated not posting about this at all, because a) it's embarrassing as hell, and b) I'm probably going to get trolled a fair bit.
I'm the type of person that literally always triple checks when I toss things, or buys things out of bazaar or ah that's worth more than 50k. The worst I've done in ~7 years of playing, is accidentally tab down in the ah and not notice while bidding, and bid 40k on the wrong pair of shoes.
This morning I was tired and grumpy, and overly derpy. I barely slept the night before, and finally just dragged myself out of bed and decided to go AE cleave my whm mule or something. I was sorting through my inventory, and noticed I had a Vermeil Bhuj in my inventory from doing Glavoids last night. I thought I was on it, but apparently I wasn't - the next thing I saw in my log was "You throw away a Mandau." I'm not looking for any sympathy, I should've been taking a lot more care with what I had selected. I'm well aware it was my own dumbass fault. Pretty much the very first time I wasn't extremely anal about checking what I was tossing, and it cost me very dearly.
Anyways, on to my point. Obviously, I placed a GM call immediately. A normal GM replied to me pretty quickly, however I was told that they can't restore the item because "the mandau is an item that contains internal data (being a trial weapon), and is not something we can recover", nor will they do a rollback to this morning before I tossed it. They won't reimburse the LV75 version, either. I asked to talk with a SGM, and am still waiting (this was at about 8am this morning, it's now nearly 4PM).
Andddddddd.. on to my other points. What the hell is the point of having some awesome "1 time restore per account" if they can't even restore big ticket items like a relic?
Now, just out of curiosity, if I get the same line from a SGM, how much more should I push to have it restored? There was recently just a case where someone had their Lv90 Almace restored. I don't understand how they can restore an Empyrean weapon, which is nothing but trials from start to end, but not a Relic weapon, which was part of the game YEARS before the concept of magian trials were even in game. I've seen so many lines of "we can't restore this or that" but then someone turns around and posts screenshots of GMS doing exactly what another GM said they couldn't (a restored black belt, A.body abjuration, and recently that almace all come to mind).
I'm hoping the SGM will be a little more helpful, but I'm honestly not holding my breath.
Does anyone know of any other cases where items like this were restored? Should I be the least little bit hopeful that a sgm will be sympathetic?
At any rate, TL;DR - be careful what you toss, because according to this GM's policy, if you toss anything like a relic, mythic, or empyrean, they can't restore it. Again, not looking for any sympathy, just a warning to be very careful tossing things if you're near any gear that you hold dear.
