I've copied and pasted a bunch of times, hit preview, and hit post, and nothing happens.

What am I missing?

Same thing happened to me for a few days :( I think it takes a day or two for them to verify it...and I think it has some bugs atm >.<

I assume you are looking for FFXI not FFXIV since you shouldn't need to buy anything to register XIV characters... If I remember right there is a code you need to add to your LS community profile, have you done that? Also keep in mind that it will not be instant.

If it is XIV you just need to put the code in your lodestone biography.
