exactly, if anything, bioware and bethesda RPGs are true RPGs by nature. you create the char, assume the role, and make all the decisions.

JRPGs betray everything roleplaying is, and end up cliche anime action adventures full of niche tropes found almost in every JRPG known to man. fall for the obvious trap, trust the obvious villian, you move cliche teens through a scifi setting, and that isnt role playing at all.

Ya gotta forgive my ignorance but what the heck does "JRPG" stand for, and why has this term suddenly come to the forefront of games? Is it simply a Japanese RPG? Or is there something else about a particular game, that gives it this branding?

It's basically an open ended shooter, the controls, the combat, the gameplay is all designed like a fps. What about it makes it an rpg and not a story driven shooter? On the flip side though, it's basically a replica of Skyrim w/o the guns and a different skin. I consider Skyrim more of an action/adventure than a rpg though.

Maybe my opinion of a rpg is too old fashioned, but I honestly think that calling Fallout an rpg is really stretching the term.

bolded for emphasis, this is basically what japanese "RPGs" are to me. at what point do you role play in any of them? why do i have to live with the consequences of pre scripted decisions made before hand? i want to be immersed in the character and have my role playing decisions affect my universe and story outcome, not following some trite and cliche genre following tropes to a T.

Well, it kind of is isn't it? Role playing - playing the role of a character throughout a story. You don't have to have character creation and the ability to make decisions to be role playing. You are given a role, it's in the name! The introduction of decision making into RPGs is to make the game more open ended and get players to feel more involved.

maybe in the loosest of terms. it was easier in the original FF/DQ games when your character(s) had no backstory, i find that their modern games betray their roots in from the table top days. you didnt have cliche ridden teens in DnD, you made your own adventure, and to me, that makes an RPG what it is.

MMOs, and WRPGs feel more true to the original roleplaying experience.

I want the PSP game, but I'm not holding my breath. I was disappointed in the changes when they released silver star story complete. Mobs on the map... combat changes... spells missing... etc. I played through both SSSC and EBC on PS, but only because of how much I loved the original. I won't play through it again. I'd rather put my Sega CD games in, and play through them.

makes me glad namco was smart enough to leave tales of the abyss alone on 3DS aside from giving it a few QOL updates

I just pulled up my GameStop wishlist to take another look at the PSP game.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (I want the Limited Edition)

Quote:
The Arts Gauge battle system allows players to unleash devastating attacks or heal party members has been implemented to add another dimension to the battle system.

Leave the damn game alone if you're going to port it. Sure, redo graphics. I don't really care. Just leave the core of the game alone.

I guess I'm a bit of a masochist for doing it, but I just ordered it.

Anyway, I've been debating since yesterday about getting Kingdoms of Amular. I'm already getting burned out on Skyrim.

Strage observation: Fallout 3 I used VATS allthe time. But in New Vegas I almost never use it, playing the same type of character. Just something about NV seems to lend itself to real-time FPS'ing more than Fallout 3 does.

Bastion is a great game if you haven't played it. It's more of a dungeon crawler than a true "RPG," but it's beautiful -- both visually and soundtrack -- and it's just a fun game. Quick play, sadly, but many replay option.

Very worth it.

Working Designs is, to me, the epitome of what an RPG company should be (even moreso than Squaresoft even was). I was one of the like.... 3 people who owned a SegaCD back in the genesis days. EVERYTHING they made had a HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE attention to detail. When I saw OP had lunar in it, I was going to suggest finding an emulator and playing Vay, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, Growlanser...... (drones on)...... I was also going to suggest Xenogears, and the shining force collection... that is until I re-read the title and saw "current gen". I think you should still do yourself a favor and play these, or if you have, re dust them off.

FOR THE RECORD: I'm not a ffxi-bandwagoner. I've played xenogears every 6 months for the last like.... EVER. You guys are jockin me, not vice versa D:

I just got to the thames and I've had "MEN... OF.... THE SEA" in my head all day :/
