I wouldn't be surprised if they went after those who paid to have their illegal files hosted. I'm not sure if they will bother unless they somehow screw up this case.

It'd be difficult to have stable ground on legally because unless there was some underhanded deal or conspiracy to continuously host them; members paid MegaUpload for simply faster downloads.

Google paid a settlement for Youtube. This is essentially the same thing on a grander scale with fees for access. I see no reason why they wouldn't be successfully sued. Will they be convicted of criminal charges? Maybe, maybe not.

Wow, it's pretty bad when Google has to pay off to leave their domains untouched (for now).

Oh I don't think anyone will spend time in jail over this, but it will cost them quite a bit.

They have the records of everyone who received money as part of the rewards program. They also have e-mails of them saying 'pay them even though they did have some copyrighted material'. Though they also used the same excuse to not have to pay out to half of the people on the list.

Dumbasses for communicating with each other on such a subject through a medium that doesn't ever 100% delete what is processed and sent.

I've never used this site. I've been redirected there before, but never bothered to use them. They are a lot of better and safer ways. So meh, really. Yeah it kinda sucks, but from what you guys are saying they knew and had ample time to try and not get caught, so meh.

I'm glad it's gone.. I get tired of seeing it linked.. I'm not going to pay them some exorbitant fee to not have my viewing time limited.. I hope VideoBB is next.

They're both (well not Megavideo/Megaupload anymore I guess) making tons of money selling subscriptions (I think a year long Megavideo sub was like 200-300 bucks? I know it was ridiculously high) to what is basically just a giant video server for pirated movies.

Just goes to show you that the government already has ample means to go after sites. SOPA and PIPA not required.

included fees of $9.99 for monthly subscriptions, $59.99 for yearly subscriptions, and $199.99 for lifetime subscriptions.

Edit: That was for MegaUpload I believe. I don't know if they had separate packages for other sites.

That might've been it, the lifetime package.. I'm not sure though.. I stopped using Megavideo years ago because because of the limit and price. I mean the quality and load time was great, but I can find the same video on sites that are free in near equal quality and usually at speeds fast enough to not need to wait for buffering about 90% of the time.

If megaupload is gone. Then YouTube can easily be gone
Copyrighted episodes hosted on youtube without the permission of the owner are infringing. Youtube provides methods for policing infringing content, which is what is required of them. Megaupload honestly in many respects was really just a piracy haven.

Youtube did something else interesting though, it made a deal with the media industry that if you pay for the music on that particular video individually, you can have a video with music. That's an example of when you're obtaining rights to use copyrighted material in another work.

ppp.

On or about January 28, 2010, in an e-mail entitled “activating oldcountries,” a user of a Mega Conspiracy site asked BATATO: “where can we see full movies?”BATATO replied “You need to go to our referrer sites. Such as --- or ----[.] There are the movie and series links. You cannot find them by searchingon MV directly. That would cause us a lot of trouble ;-)”

As if download sites like that are the real problem, torrenting is where the real piracy is.

Not to say that Megaupload wasn't at fault with piracy, there is literally every piece of film on Megaupload that you can imagine, even screening videos for shows like Californication and House (I saw both online through Megaupload 1~3 months before release).

Shutting down Megaupload will only make "untouchable" sites like TPB even more popular.

Didn't megavideo want you to spend like 10 dollars a day or like 400 a year to watch more than an hour of video before cutting you off?

Nvm:

1 month premium membership : US$9.99
2 months premium membership : US$11.99
1 year premium membership : US$49.99
2 years premium membership : US$69.99
Lifetime platinum membership : US$199.99

Eh, there was an app for Chrome (i assume the other browsers as well) that allowed you to stream videos directly from megaupload.

No idea how it worked, but it was faster, more efficient, and better quality than anything else I've ever seen. (1080p and 720p videos were often found there, and streamed flawlessly on my cable/dsl w/e connection).

Really sad that it won't be available anymore :<

That's why the U.S. wants the power to shut down any foreign sites. But even if they did, you know many times TPB has bypassed everything? They're very experience at it to say the least.

Megaupload/video was pretty much the sole problem for common video piracy, as you could pretty much google anything and get a megavideo stream of it (with the limitations). I saw all of Dexter(4 seasons) and Scrubs(all 8 seasons) that way before I knew about other methods.

I might need to get cable now... q.q

Or, like i said earlier, torrent everything as that will be more rampant than ever now.

By shutdown, I mean not allowing U.S. IP Addresses access.

They can't touch their actual servers.
