Anyone else stationed out here in Korea? I've found two of us out here at Osan so far and one of them being on Phoenix. Just seeing if there are any others I'm not aware of in Osan or nearby. Maybe on Phoenix. Do some Abyssea stuff and have fun on our time zone schedule.

And curious to know how many armed force members out here are playing while away from home. =d

Yeah I had problems like that too but then one day... POOF. I don't know what happened. I haven't had to use a VPN in a long time. So I'm lag free. You using windower? That is what changed it for me.

Skivvy Nine. And haven't done a whole lot of partying since I'm married and I avoid any temptation... though I don't have a big thing for Asians so Korea is perfectly fine. Haha. I'm enjoying the food and locations a lot. Plenty to see. Looking forward to skiing in the mountain this winter. =D

I'm using the official windower through the config menu and the lag seems like it is going to be very bad since im still updating and its been a good 5hrs lol. Once it finishes i can try shutting all my VPN stuff off and not use windower see if it makes a difference.

Use this Windower and see if your problems get solved. I wish I could remember exactly when/how it started working...

I was TDY there back in 2007, and again to UAE in 2009-10. I was SE blocking the IP ranges for those two countries not the ISP's. Only way I could get around it was VPN.

Called SE when it was happening and they said those countries were part of regions not authorized to use Playonline. Further research on BG showed that they suspect it was due to RMT hotspots.

Wish you had been on my server and over there while I was! I pretty much just took a 2 year break while I was living there since I could never match up schedules with my ls. Be sure to visit Jeju Island! Enjoy that kimchi. ;)

Weird. I have no idea what's happening. I'm playing fine without a VPN... Using normal ole Korean DSL.

Here for three years so I plan on seeing a lot of Korea and nearby countries. =D

And since I am here that long, hoping this encourages friends to come out and see this part of the world. Free lodging is always awesome and everything is so close. =D

I may have found a solution to play FFXI in Korea without a VPN. I have no idea why it is acting this way at all. I've just noticed from my situation and my wife's.

When I first arrived on Pen, I used a VPN to re-install XI due to the Steam's UBER collector's edition. Took many of hours, but it finally installed. Then one day I forgot to log onto with the VPN but I was able to connect anyway. I was rejoicing!

I moved to a different location on my base where I started having the same problems again logging onto XI without a VPN. The wife has recently since then got her need for XI back and we decided to install it onto her laptop. Needed a VPN. After the installation, I logged in like normal but after running around a bit and noticing that there wasn't the normal VPN-lag, I noticed the VPN was turned off. And I logged off and on without the assistance of the VPN.

Now this is twice I've used a VPN to install/update XI on two different laptops while in Korea. I don't know what's going on. Maybe you need to un-install XI and re-install it. I don't know.

I just know that I'm gonna be un-installing XI on my laptop now and re-installing it in the same matter I did it with the wife's game. It's worked twice. Why not a third time?

But hopefully that sheds some light for any of you other XI players here in Korea! Happy gaming.

I've been working with my base ISP (I'm sure it is the same ISP provided at all the US bases if they use LG U+) and they said the issue is actually Square Enix. They aren't accepting the IP addresses we are assigned.

I know I am able to play on base without a VPN without any problems but when I'm in my building, I need access to my VPN. If there are any other FFXI players in Korea, find out what your IP address is and contact SE customer service. I have started the paperwork but the agent I spoke couldn't find any tickets on the issue of players having a problem in S.Korea and logging on.

So I'm hoping that if there are my complaints/issues brought forth and a larger paper trail than one person, the issue could be brought forth to SE and we can game here without any problems.

Living off post you won't have the problem. On base ISP is different. I'm sure you've heard your friends complain about how slow and expensive our DSL is. And the problem seems to vary from location to location.

On base there are 4 dorms I've taken my laptop and LAN party with no problems or need of a VPN or proxy. But where I live and the neighboring tower, it won't work without aid. Also same with the Turumi Hotel. And when I go off base to my friend's house to LAN, I get to use Korea's high-speed ISP.

You'll need to use a VPN software. SE's login servers have most of SK's major ISP's blocked. Awhile back there was a rash of hacking attempts, they were using the botnets inside the internet cafe's to do it, SE's response was to just block the whole country and call it a day.

KT and SK 100Mbps service are both blocked, LG (off post) and some of the minor cable internet providers aren't blocked. The one base may or may not be blocked, I'm in Daegu and I haven't recently checked them. I live off base and use SK.

I'm on Lakshmi and these are the IP's ranges that I have to route through the VPN to play.

route add -net 124.150.154.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 124.150.153.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 124.150.154.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 124.150.152.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}

There may be more for each server. What you need to do is load wireshark up and have it running in capture mode before you play. Use the following filter to help you identify the IP's that are being blocked.

ip.src==192.168.0.0/16 && !ip.dst==192.168.0.0/16

If you have no other internet program running then you should only see FFXI packets. You'll be looking for when it starts to hang and repeats requests to a specific destination, most likely with a 124 as it's first octet.

Only other option is to use client based VPN and route ~EVERYTHING~ through it. Could be slow though. I recommend overplay as they have servers in japan to connect to. That way your connection is going from SK to Japan to SE servers in Japan rather then SK to US to SE's servers in Japan.

See that's the weird thing though and the LG U+ technicians are trying to figure out. I carried my laptop around Osan AB with them and plugged into the different buildings around base and here and there I'd be blocked but not all. So that's why they suggested I take it up through SE and see if they can unblock certain IP ranges or specific ones.

So I'm now going through SE and their service providers and seeing if they can remedy the situation. For my first 8 months here I haven't had to use a VPN and I loved that. I really miss it. I shouldn't have to be forced to use a VPN when I moved a whole 0.4 miles away from my dorms to my spouse housing.

Dude I feel you. It was several years ago that they did this, no announcement. One day I'm playing fine, the next when I go to log in *BLAM* can't reach the servers. SE wouldn't help at all as the NA support line said they didn't support the SK region. Good luck if you can get the Korean ISP and SE to fix it, though from my experience the Koreans and Japanese really don't get along and will just blame each other.

It's odd that they did that to Korea and not to China, of all places. o.o I can log in just fine with no VPN, but for some strange reason I need the VPN to access this site.

Not sure about Korea, but China's one big time zone--it should be pretty close to you guys. :D If anyone's on Shiva, hit me up sometime (I'm lonely lol ; ;) !!

Due to the level of control the Chinese government has on their networks the actual botnet infected computers are not inside China. Their mostly inside internet cafe's and unprotected home computers. This way from inside China the controller can send a remote command to the machines and then they'll initiate the DDoS attack. Blocking the Chinese range would have absolutely no effect on the attack itself.

Yeah, I had to transfer to Phoenix to hang out with the few XI players at Osan.

And see. You're just like me. Capable of playing with no problems. I really feel if more of us go through SE customer support and push tickets through, we may be able to do something about it! =D

I didn't know that. Fascinating. Though for real, SE. Lets take that banhammer off of S.Korea now. <3

Depends on where you live. I have LG, and it is blocked. But anyways, he is in lodging, so he dosn't really have a choice either way.
