Presidential Candidates .. Who do you like?
Ever since Al Gore championed global warming every Republican has denied its existence, pure entertainment.
No, they deny its existence because anthropogenic climate change is inconvenient for the people funding their campaigns.
To be fair, Al Gore doesn't really help the cause, hinders it more than anything.
That happens when you're a huge douchebag.
it definitely should have been someone else.
It should have been a hot ethnically ambiguous chick.
I want to know why the only time I hear George Soros's name get mentioned is because some right-wing nutjob is trying to make the, "same thing both sides" argument.
Otherwise, I never hear a peep out of any news organizations about him regarding anything he does. Even without Al Gore, the irony of a party that touts personal responsibility as being paramount to the health of the nation refusing to take responsibility for aiding man-made climate change is not lost on me. Hey guys the only thing that effects the earths temperature is CO2!
Wait no, there are tons of factors that can go into the earths temperature. I have poured tons of hours into researching this to get at what is really going on. The only thing that I have found is that there is no conclusive evidence that any warming of the earth is from man made CO2. We have been recording temperatures from only about 1850. Before that, we have to dig into the earth to get a look at what is going on. So what was going on before 1850? A lot of variation in temperature, that's what. It goes up, it goes down. It laughs and it cries. But when you get down to the nitty gritty of global warming and ask yourself, "Should I give a ***?" No. No you shouldn't. There are lots of more important things than worrying about something that you have no control of and you will never be effected by. But people think it's a big issue since it's highly politicized. Here are the bullet points of why you shouldn't give a ***: 1. The temperature is going up slowly. Very slowly. 2. The sea level rise will never get to the point of where something horrific happens like Flordia is underwater. At least not in our lifetimes. It also happens so slowly that it wouldn't be like a flash flood, it's like dripping water filling your sink. 3. There is literally nothing you can do about it. Even if the US stopped putting out any CO2, newly industrialized nations and China don't give a ***. Especially China. Whenever someone asks them to lower their CO2 they give them the middle finger. Hey Sparthos, why don't you all tell us that bed time story about how the Evil Satan worshiping, racist, bigoted, greedy Republicans were defeated by the all mighty child saving, tolerant, angelic and saving a cute kitty from a burning building Democrats? I'm pretty tired and could use a good story for beddy time. Hey you cant give out 2 golds, one of those fools has to get the silver.

If they affect a foundation species, these effects can be catastrophic. See: zooxanthellae. 2.) Small sea level rises will absolutely devestate coastal wetlands, one of the highest sources of net-primary-productivity on the planet. 3.) Right, everyone is going to litter, so I should just throw my trash wherever. Gold medal, self-interested reality denial. Right back atcha. *wink* Oh btw, I clearly have an agenda and am easily influenced by everyone. That's why it takes me so *** long to make up by mind about anything. Because the amount of research required to figure out the truth, especially about something so politicized as global warming is just stupid. So just admitting that I have no *** clue if humans are causing the warming makes me some self-interested reality denialist? Give me a *** break. If you couldn't find any evidence, then you didn't understand what you were looking at.
So you can have the gold medal in poor research practices, instead. I'm pretty tired and could use a good story for beddy time. You already covered bedtime stories in your own last post summarized as "hey, lets do nothing because it won't affect us in our lifetimes!" regarding climate change. You simultaneously said that something is happening yet that something isn't going to happen... while you're around. So this means we should do nothing? By the way, I'm aware all self-identifying Republicans don't think alike and when I do use the term "Republicans" its in response to the Nausi builds that see everything in black/white, snap up sound bytes, point to the other side for all ills and typically regurgitate FOX here. On topics of climate change and the previous conversation regarding divisions of church/state, I am correct in pointing out that the Republican party has been the one championing these issues as they prioritize such topics above others. When and if I see a strong Democratic charge on those fronts I'll be more than happy to tear into them about it too. Fenrir.Sylow said: » Quote: 1. The temperature is going up slowly. Very slowly. 2. If they affect a foundation species, these effects can be catastrophic. See: zooxanthellae. If humans die because one species dies, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. Also very small life forms that reproduce very fast and evolve very fast. The only reason we even have so much algie is because the sea life was eating it so fast that it evolved to produce much faster. 2.) Small sea level rises will absolutely devestate coastal wetlands, one of the highest sources of net-primary-productivity on the planet. When? And are humans really that stupid to not be able to stop it? 3.) Right, everyone is going to litter, so I should just throw my trash wherever. More like I might as well throw my cup onto that heap of trash because it's so *** big and no one else is going to stop. Humans are not my sole concern. Also, you once again show your inability to conduct good research by completely missing the point on zooxanthellae.
Climate change is already affecting the wetlands near my house: Your text to link here... And sure, go ahead, throw that cup there. I'd rather get people to clean up their acts than swim in their - and my own - garbage. I'm having a hard time understanding why people would trust their own internal intuition and disregard actual, consistent, testable scientific knowledge.
Because it's inconvenient.

Title of that movie was really the only good part :(
Rest of the movie was ruined for me by Al Gore whining about things that had nothing to do with anthropogenic climate change. Late but I wanted to share a bit of what I read about the Japanese plant at the time.
From what I read, the cooling system for the plant was run by power brought in from outside the plant, not by the plant itself. The nation's infrastructure was obviously damaged by the quake and tsunami which made that impossible. What was also damaged was their backup system of diesel generators. That plant, from what I read, had safeguards in place that were it built in the U.S. would not even be allowed to operate. It was not a shining example of nuclear safety by any measure. trucido said: » Late but I wanted to share a bit of what I read about the Japanese plant at the time. That plant, from what I read, had safeguards in place that were it built in the U.S. would not even be allowed to operate. It was not a shining example of nuclear safety by any measure. there was way more than one quake, in fact 2 were measured above the level the plant was designed to withstand, the fact that it didn't go into full meltdown just from that is amazing, that and that month those reactors were going to be replaced anyway... That comparison however can't really be used as the last incident I recall was 3mile island, and since then we haven't built a new plant since, so um yeah... also: source? Here's an interesting map http://www.japanquakemap.com/ the bottom of the list, 3/11/2011.
apparently the reactors were designed to withstand up to a 7.0 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1366721/Japan-tsunami-Government-warned-nuclear-plants-withstand-earthquake.html so apparently I was wring (according to that link) there were 3 quakes stronger... quick wiki since it has the data, verify if you wish: I made bold the 3 earthquakes (according to the map in first link). Structural integrity aside, the government failed to require a plan for power failure at a power plant, and they even lost their backup power, and nobody knew the proper way to use the emergency cooling equipment that had never been used (a valve was closed) and a display was broken (that showed water levels in tank 1) (the lack of redundant monitors, and their lack of radiation proofing their communications room are the biggest failures I see). Nobody planned for the worst case scenario, as they thought it was outside the realm of possibility, truth be told it's kind of hard to plan for everything when it comes to having to use other people's money. However for reactors that were hit with 4 things they weren't designed to withstand (3 earthquakes and a tsunami) and had less than 30 days remaining anyway, I'm impressed that it wasn't much worse. on another note, I found this crazy conspiracy theory while digging, talk about hating jews: http://www.henrymakow.com/theargumentfukushimasabotage.html Fenrir.Sylow said: » Title of that movie was really the only good part :( Rest of the movie was ruined for me by Al Gore whining about things that had nothing to do with anthropogenic climate change. Had to watch that movie w/the the wife for one of her college classes... what a waste of time. It was a tiny bit climate change talk & a *** ton of Gore pretending to be some lone wolf superhero out to save the world with his rolling suitcase. Ihina is stupid.
Late to the party on the nuclear power talk, but here is my issue with it (specifically in the U.S.)
We know that nuclear plants, when run correctly, are for the most part completely safe. However, in this country, how can we trust private industry to uphold the safety side? When you have companies who's sole motivation is squeezing out every penny of profit, I do not trust them to maintain the highest levels of safety. Increase the number of facilities and the number of people involved and you increase the chances of people cutting corners for profits sake. This happens all the time in all industries so I cannot expect nuclear to be any different. |
