I want another CoP style expansion. I'd suffer having my character on Bahamut for that.
Actually Bahamut is pretty chill. Most everyone I've come into contact with has been friendly. Take into account the fact that I spend very little time in port jeuno tho. Best thing SE has done in a long time is putting abyssea warp dudes in home cities.
It's nothing against Bahamut. It's just not Ramuh. 7 years on the same server makes a merge rough.

I feel the same way about Ifrit >> Odin.. I'm starting to warm up to the Odin crowd though, as random people are teamin up with me when I solo +1 seals :).

Warm up faster, damn it, or I'll start throwing blankets at you!
Addicts are addicts... if you are a true FFXI fiend you can always find something to do (like collect all relics/mythics/empys). I don't think it is actually possible to complete everything this game has to offer. Even without a real storyline, trio'ing multiple empyrean weapons takes quite a while, especially with the influx from server migration.
I would imagine there will be one last expansion in store* ($$$). It would not be FFXI without one more set of ridiculously lame missions that everyone scrambles over the first day or so that they are released. I do not imagine it will be terribly difficult overall, but they will add challenges to it that parallel the sentiments regarding some 75 cap tasks.
As far as zones, I actually don't think we'll see very many more zones. All of the Abyssea zones have a relatively large area within it, which I imagine will contain new mobs post 90 for exping. However, I think they'll want us to find gear outside Aby all in all from some new ground kings and some other stuff.
Anyway, yes, there will be one more expansion IMO.
*edit: in store - upcoming | didn't mean in a Gamestop lol

Good riddance to Ramuh! It was the most jaded and inactive server when it bit the dust.

That would make Krizz's hair fall out. And we do need the mohawk.
New areas are definitely in high demand and the development team is well aware of this. For the year ahead of us, the development team’s main focus is on raising the level cap to 99, the adjustments surrounding this, as well as the addition of content to go along with it. Due to this, the development team does not have any immediate plans to implement new areas; however, they would like to try their best to do so going forward.
October 2011 – March 2012
--------------------------------------------------------------------
With the introduction of the test server, we intend to shift from alternating between major and minor patches to more frequent version updates, each of which will host the latest fruit of the new development and testing cycle.
Version Update Highlights
Level cap increase to 99
New adventurer growth elements
Job adjustments
In-game systems:
Voidwatch parts 3 and 4 The Last Stand (name TBA)
Dungeon crawling (name TBA)
New battlefields
New Grounds of Valor areas
New treasure casket areas
Monster redistribution
Fellows adjustments and additions
Level cap increase (95 and 99)
New summonable areas
Crafting adjustments and additions
Synergy: recipes to augment existing gear
Synthesis: skill cap increase
Pretty sure the bolded = that crystal area thing, so probably within the realms of reason to say we could be seeing some new areas next year. Full expansion would be doubtful, though I've wanted a Far East expansion since the first time we met Tenzen in CoP.

Could they be hiding the expansion from us? Maybe, but I'm not holding my breathe for one.
yah thats not a good sign. Seems like they are going to be running this game on updates alone pretty much. Unless vanafest happens and i hear otherwise...just a sad day.
Was going to play again in Aug with a RL friend of mine again, but knowing its still going to be nothing big like that coming and abyssea is still the focus means im not going to bother.

well Eve Online has the free expantion idea. to where you cant play if your not up to date. this seems to be where FFXI is going, they said they want to do more updates.

I used to help people with their solo +1 all the time on Ifrit. After I came to Odin I more frequently ran into the type of people who like to be anal about pop spots. Then again, that's more about population density than anything else. Has that not always been the problem with FFXI? Too few resources to go around? Competition run amok?
As for the actual post: If they weren't making an expansion there wouldn't be anything left for us to do. They have to make one and they are. I just hope they contain a little more story in the expansion. Something to make me actually want to finish their quests and missions. Abyssea wasn't really an expansion (much less 3) so much as it was a new place to get shinies.

Seeing the new content you would think so wouldn't you? I just think SE is going to do another one of its lazy tricks to pull us in while providing fake new content, like put some NPC's across a few areas like voidwatch did. We don't know what the last stand is, and that artwork picture doesn't look a whole lot different than Riverne - Site's. Sure, it would be cool I guess if they reskinned that but that could also mean that is just a cutscene of a place we never will have access too. I wouldn't put them against it.
For all we know the last stand could be just another PvP thing. Not that that would be a bad thing, but it is going to be one of those things you try out, its neat, then your done after a few. If it is a story then that's great, but no one can say what it is because there is no information on it.
SE isn't all of a sudden going to change with how they release content. You will never go to a store to buy an expansion again, it will always be updates sent to you from now on. It's cheaper to release updates like they have and people ate it up. As much as the majority of players hate what content has been released the past year everyone ate it up. When I say players, I'm not talking about just the current players staying around today, but also all the players who quit during abyssea releases, or during the announcement of the level cap being raised. We all trusted SE, and we keep trusting them hoping for new areas and new stories, something to keep us happy. If they see too many people leaving sure they will do something about it, but right now they are seeing results of their work. The results being that everyone loves abyssea so much that that is all they do anymore, so they must be doing something right! .../sarcasm
Voidwatch = ZNM Style + Abyssea/WoE System. It's not that unique and the fact that they were pretty lazy with just throwing NPC's across a few areas kinda pisses me off. During their second Voidwatch update they will continue to do that and MAYBE include cut off areas like the final ZNM's did, but even then making it even less unique of a system. Yea its fun, doesn't mean its unique. Okay a few things were thrown in there to make it different, but I don't think that makes it unique.
Those two pretty much sum up a years worth of updates that was given to us. Abyssea and voidwatch just used previous areas, which they didn't have to do that and could of make it unique. Voidwatch could of been an salvage style system where you enter in a series of rooms and the NM is waiting for you. You could of had battles or puzzles to solve on the way, idk so many ideas could of been done with that. Abyssea could of been unique areas, and if they used the original it could of been distorted and things could have been moved around, like whole sections of zone moved around. It is much easier to just copy a zone, and recolor it, and maybe put in some different environmental objects.
WoTG wasn't really any better. It did include a few unique areas (that looked strangely like ares we've been in before :P), but at least its theme made it okay. You can say abyssea's theme made that okay too but lets look back for a sec. WoTG went live nov 22, 2007, while ToAU went was released april 20, 2006.
WoTG provided a great story and unique ideas, so I consider it new content and areas even though the areas part is iffy. Now, if you want real new areas you have to go way back to 2006 since we got a real new area(s). That is how long ago we recieved new areas to explore, WoTG provided areas we have had since the beginning (or when they were introduced) but with a twist, so that made them very interesting. Abyssea tried to go that route I think and it didn't go so well with the gaming community, and voidwatch doesn't provide anything new other than a few new monsters and NPC's scattered across the land.
I liked abyssea, it was fun for awhile. The thing that sucked though was knowing that in 3 months they weren't going to release anything other than another reskinned zone, when so many people were hoping for something unique in the end to make it something really cool. Either way, abyssea has provided a lot of fun and interesting content, but none of it is new except the armor. Abyssea made a lot of people mad, but also made the majority of players remaining happy. You can't ask the players who quit why they did, but the most likely reason for the majority of that group is because they lost interest. The players remaining either truely love the content, enjoy spending time with friends regardless of what content comes out even though they might hate it, or keep holding on hoping SE releases something amazing that peaks their interests. I think I'm a lil bit of the last two honestly, but I'm fine with that, but I still don't think they will release a new expansion full of new areas and a unique story that enchants us all ever again.
I almost gave up on my dream of seeing the missing continents(especially Gha Naboh Matriarchate), but I'll keep dreaming while I can. Idk why they wouldn't want to release something big again, I don't know how much it costs to produce, but I'm confident that they would gain a profit from all the players buying it nevertheless.
I really want it, but since I read that post from Camate my hopes crumbled from a "maybe in the next months" to a "who knows two years from now". That's a very long time and I doubt I'll be still around by then.

lol, anyways I think they aren't going to do anything different than what they have been doing like I have said before.
Good riddance to Ramuh! It was the most jaded and inactive server when it bit the dust.
It was an angry, and burnt out server (more so for it's final year there) but it was my home since I was just a wee Elvaan in 04'
The HNM scene was fun for me, and a lot of my friends tho. Especially when they added DI & SW. There was a good rivalry, and competition between linkshells while I did HNM. It is something I miss in todays low man onry abyssea mentality.

when i read the bit about them not doing anything about new areas...even the the demand for new zones and story seems pretty damn high means they must be just riding this game out at this point.

abyssea til the end i suppose.
They might do something, but they shouldn't keep it secret from people much longer IMO. If they do it right they release the information during the major update, or a month into it, but if it isn't coming then then I'm not sure it is ever going to.
I want them to finish CoP/Zilart The last Verse, its been in the mission log for yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrsssss.
They just kind of leave you with "Oh hey Lions been having these bad dreams about the world ending but yea oh well not gonna let you see anything about it!" Kinda *** up way to leave you hanging IMO x:

Also, didn't it take 6 years for them to break even? That is a year after WoTG was released, around the time updates for WoTG became extremely slow and they started releasing their "mini-expansions". Also it's been 8 months since they released the final abyssea expansion. lol, I guess 14 could explain the sluggish behavior since it was announced August 2005 that they just began working on a new MMORPG.
Final Fantasy XI - May 16, 2002 Rise of the Zilart - April 17, 2003 (11 months, 2 days) Chains of Promathia - September 17, 2004 (1 year, 5 months, 1 day) Treasures of Aht Urhgan - April 18, 2006 (1 year, 7 months, 2 days) Wings of the Goddess - November 20, 2007 (1 year, 7 months, 3 days) A Crystalline Prophecy - March 23, 2009 (1 year, 4 months, 4 days) A Moogle Kupo d'Etat - July 6, 2009 (3 months, 14 days) A Shantotto Ascension - November 9, 2009 (4 months, 4 days) Vision of Abyssea - June 21, 2010 (7 months, 13 days) Scars of Abyssea - September 8, 2010 (2 months, 19 days) Heroes of Abyssea - December 6, 2010 (2 months, 29 days)
Since Then - July 31, 2011 (7 months, 26 days)
4 out of 5 of these is missing the point, or perhaps suffering from a case of wishful thinking. This game no longer suffers from PS2 limitations, it suffers from FFXI limitations. You'd have to be living under a rock, or perhaps repeatedly hitting yourself on the head with one, to not realize the game has gone from 32 servers to 16 over the course of a year. We're not revving up here for all new continents. Things are winding down. I know during the last 9 years it's been tradition to mock anyone saying FFXI is dying, so I'm reluctant to mutter the words. But I think you're kidding yourself if you can't admit at least that things are winding down.
Once we've gotten that far, it's obvious that developers can't pull money out of their ***. And they're not lazy. They only have as much money to work with as this game draws in (and not even that much, as some goes to support the servers, and some goes directly to the company as profit) and this amount continues to diminish. I think we're really, really lucky to see a single new area in the works, even if it will probably be the last. The rest of the "new" content will be recycled old content. They're fully revamping all TAU content for example. We'll have new nyzul floors, new salvage floors, new ein wings, and new zeni tiers. Voidwatch will also continue to be sprinkled throughout vana'diel.
The past 4 some years of reskinned maps should have served as some indication of the way we're headed. Feel free to fool yourself into believing otherwise.
They only have as much money to work with as this game draws in
Then they need to stop selling expansions for 10 dollars. People will gladly pay for good content for 30+ dollars if it actually provides the ***we have been asking for for years. Not enough money isn't an excuse when all they are doing is making mediocre content for 10 dollars.
I Stopped playing for a while, mainly because i quickly grew tired of what abyssea did to FFXI. The good: small man content, most people can get good gear quickly..ect the bad: most of the old content became unused, gear people worked so long on became "meh" gear, leveling became a joke and any monkey could get multi-90's quick....TRIGGERS!!
Now that abyssea is done and we still have 9 levels worth to go, do you think SE will pump out a (possibly final) expansion or equivalent in mini expansions for it?
If they could do it (new zones, gear, a real story..ect) i would jump back into this game in a heart beat..even with college starting up again soon, id play whenever i could.
I miss this game and seeing FF14 become the turd (and will be turd for a LONG LONG time) i was hoping SE would give us something big like and expansion...so i could come back to this game and not worry about abyssea only crap.
Its been a long time since the release of WoTG and fanfest (i think?) is coming pretty soon, do you think they have been hiding an expansion this whole time? With the mini expansions done whats left for 90+? (it can't be just updates can it?) Would you play more or again if they did put in a true expansion?
