"Atheist Life vs. Religious Life" [video]
For the record, I am not an Atheist. However, I agree with the messages in this video, and I think it's important for everyone to think about it. There are multiple other threads this could be put in.
you aren't an atheist? I no longer have any meaning in life after hearing this.
One minute into the video and already spotted Godwin's Law. :/
Not gonna watch the rest of this. Saw this video a while ago if im not mistaken.
The bit about treatment of women is why my sister turned into a skeptic. No matter how you dance around it, Biblical text is pretty dead set on women being nothing more than breeding machines, objects and second class humans. Anybody ever watch that show on TV.. Think it was on the Life Channel or some crap... Its a married couple with like 13 kids or some crap like that... They are very religious and I think christians don't believe in birth control. Idk, I'm aethist, but that just goes with the whole "breed machine" comment... Just food for thought, cuz idk how true it is...

It's a broad statement but it's fact that the best way to spread the faith is through childbirth.
Catholics have been the best example of an anti birth control sect but many people choose to just ignore some aspects of religious belief. Women have wised up in recent times and realized that there is more to life than being pregnant multiple times, rearing children at home and being beholden to a man but depending on your sect, it is a duty to be fruitful and multiply... if you wanna have sex :P Caitsith.Mahayaya said: One minute into the video and already spotted Godwin's Law. :/ Not gonna watch the rest of this. That's too bad. The best parts of this video are in the middle and towards the end, in my opinion. This guy makes it sounds like atheism and theism are the only options.
Can't tell if this is a troll or not, but I know many practicing theists who have many if not all of the so-called positive traits described in the "atheists can" portion of the video. And since when are all theists Christians? This guy only seems to be familiar with monotheism. How ignorant. He sounds just as preachy and uninformed as any theist would. Personally, I know atheism is in vogue but I really don't see the difference between blind faith and blind atheism, or the need for them to be the only two choices. The point of atheism is "think for yourselves," right? Maybe that's what people should start doing instead of falling into either crowd based on popular opinion. Why would the creator of the video need to reference other religions when that is not the topic he is addressing? He was a former christian, so its obvious he would be using that as the base of discussion. Unless it's ok to make broad statements about "religion" using only one specific religion as a basis. The video is targeted to Americans (given the Youtube user is living in the US) and... last I checked, Christianity is the dominating religion of the country.

I agree he should have done a better job labeling his video but its obvious what he's trying to compare. Regarding Christianity, birthrates and contraception, there is an old testament scripture which encourages families to have a larger number of offspring. This has given rise to a modern movement known as "the full quiver"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiverfull I first heard about it on the Reasonable Doubt podcast, which is a great skeptical podcast, also very entertaining. cheers Carbuncle.Ianpyst said:  Nitpicking is really not needed here. If I choose to watch the video as "Christianity vs. atheism," then, the point still remains that there are other alternatives that the creator of the video neglects to mention, which still in my opinion is narrow-minded and ignorant. The situation is not either/or, and Let me restate that, choosing one does not exclude you from being able to excercise the qualities that he describes as being reserved only for the other. My grandmother had 13 children, because Catholics aren't allowed to use birth control.
My mom's friend had 6 children and wanted to stop after 3, but those pesky catholic teachings stopped them from using birth control. Also, is anyone really shocked that the bible has woman as second class citizens? It was written by guys thousands of years ago. The whole "woman are equal" thing didn't start until very recently. Also, it's still not that way in lots of places right now. The image they use for that video is a huge face of a baby. I hate babies. I might get around to watching it but that baby face makes me want to punch my monitor hoping that the baby will somehow feel it. Take it as a simple comparison video. He isn't showing you alternatives because that isn't the goal of the video. The goal is to show that often Christianity puts itself on a moral high ground yet one can be equally as moral, fulfilled and a role model as a nonbeliever. Simple concept eh? Yet so many people don't get it. Cerberus.Lasareth said: Carbuncle.Ianpyst said:  Nitpicking is really not needed here.
