being a pet owner and then working at a vets office I find this hilarious...except when it kind of backfires and you really do need to run blood tests or other tests.

had a sick old dog come in a couple weeks ago that was pooping bloody jelly and vomiting. Standard procedure would be to run a giardia test, parvo test, draw a blood panel, pull a stool sample to look under the microscope and hook up to fluids. If that is still inconclusive then you look at xrays.....do people want to do that? no...they just want to know whats wrong with their dog and how to fix it but they dont realize we cant tell whats wrong with your dog unless we do the above >:| Owners said no to everything and left unhappy. They were instructed to try feeding the dog bland food (boiled white rice and chicken) and our doctor was called a wirty dord. Dont know how the dog is doing now, they didnt answer follow up calls.

imagine if you were sick and you went to the hospital, all the kinds of tests your human doctors would do to you. Its all essentially the same stuff (..minus parvo testing) plus more. Now be thankful if you have health insurance. Pets are part of the family but nobody likes to pay for them.

It would be smart to annually take your pet in for a physical, booster vaccines, have their teeth cleaned and blood drawn. But I, like many people, never even had any of my pets spayed/neutered.

Yeah, I am glad I had the childhood I did and the way we are with our dogs. Once, when I was about 7-8 years old, or dog jumped the fence and got hit by a car. My family really didn't have much money at all - and even then, I could tell that that was what was driving my mom crazy about it. I remember her being awake all that night crying in the kitchen. I don't know how she did it, but she pulled together the however many thousand dollars it took for all the surgeries and whatnot, but she did.

Cagney (the dog [a boxer]) was a great dog, and she went everywhere with us and spent all her time with us and lived a health and very happy life after that - well beyond the average boxer lifetime. More than that she made our lives great. So now, maybe I am the biggest sucker ever to walk into a vet office, but I would do anything for my dogs.

there are things that you can easily get suckered into...there are things where Im like "but..I dont think this is necessary" regarding patients, albeit Ive never done something a owner hasnt approved...at the same time clients can try to sucker you too and I like to trust everybody yay gullibility. There is no perfect business.

however, if your pet has a itchy/nasty ear you should expect an ear swab to test for infection whether it be yeast, bacteria or mites.

if your pet is rubbing its butt on the floor or experiencing diarrhea, you should expect an expression of anal glands or poop collecting charge to check for worms.

if your dog is vomiting, excessively diarrhea-ing, noticeably sick....a thousand things can cause those and at the very least you should expect the vet to charge you for fluids, blood panel and xrays. You dont have to do it, you can srsly buy pedialyte and be on your way..but nobody can tell you where the symptoms come from or if your pet will get better. Even with the lab results you still might not get a conclusive answer..but thats generally peoples money limit.

skin problems too can be a thousand things..I get skin problem questions all the time when I work as a secretary.
"...Im not a doctor and your pets not here right now for me to witness its condition but have you tried oatmeal shampoo? benedryl? has it been seen by a vet and tested for mites?lice?mange?fungus?fleas?thyroid problems?allergies?....well..we can test those for you if you schedule an appointment...omg please dont bite my head off it was a suggestion!"

anyway, we should bring back the lulz
