To my knowledge, when one jumps servers and encounters their original name being already taken on the server they wish to transfer to they are allowed to change their name. However, I want to know under what circumstances if any would one be alowed to stay in their server but change their name. Other than deleting it and starting over of course >.>
If anyone has had experience in this and wishes to share something please tell ^^

If your name is offensive in any way, you can play dumb(I didn't know this was a porn stars name!) and a GM can change it, or if someone lodges a valid complaint. However, Ethereal is just lol
If I can't work something out with a GM I'll have to bug my friend into putting on a performance complaining to a GM that I have a name that depicts a pornographic actress >_>
I lost my name jumping to Valefor long ago, long story short I didnt like it their, so I returned to Bahamut. However as no one on Bahamut was called Zacknafein, my new name, I didnt get the option the change back to my old name.
However a year or so earlier, a friend of mine had been forced to change his name from Crotchcritter, due to a number of complaints.
Believing that the GMs could change my name, I contacted one, explained my situation and was told it wasnt possible, and out of his power.
So as has been stated, unless you have a name people take offense at they really wont do anything.

Well you could have created a mule on Bahamut with the name of Zacknafein before you transferred, that would have given you the option, but aside from that, there's no way to change it I think (unless perhaps you get a couple people to report you and somehow convince the GM that your name is offensive)

Delete your character then have someone on another account make a mule on your server that is named like you. its possible your name does officially not exist anymore. when that is done call SE to get your character back. this is possible only ONE time! and you need to have all informations about the char (reg codes, CC information, your address, the race, jobs, server etc etc). When you did that they will restore the character but your old name will already be taken (remember the mule someone made on another account). you will now be forced to change your name and BINGO!

I don't see you'd want to change your name, Eth. You were always one of the good ones. At least you don't have a name like Xsquallx or Sepirothhh or any combination of a FF character and the letter "x" or Zacknafein or something REDICULOUSLY overused and lame like that.

Probably will never happen but maybe SE can add an NPC called Namingway in an update and put him in Jeuno or something.

All you have to do is make a mule on another server with the same name as yours then transfer there and your name will then become yellow thus allowing you to change your name. Plus, you can't log on to your toon until your name is changed when it becomes yellow.

Do the GM thing.
well this is the way to go if you are willing to change servers AND youre able to come back (as we all know you cant go back to baha f.e.)
I contacted a GM last night and asked about it and a long story short, I'm pretty SOL. Only two circumstances exist that would allow me to change my name. First being if my name were inappropriate by nature and after being complained about and reviewed by a Senior GM would prompt me to change my name. The last being the whole server jump where my name was taken and the name I want was free. None of these conditions are looking good for me, so I'm stuck with what I got. Oh well~ Thanks for the input guys and gals.

I cleared out and deleted my mule to see if I could start fresh with the name I want but keep Ethe around for farming or whatever. Turns out the name I wanted was taken on my server /le sigh

lol, I deleted my post after I saw someone had already posted that. It would be a good sales pitch for SE. For only $49.95 change your in game name and save the hassle of transferring servers and being away for 3 months! =)
Doesn't matter anymore. The name I wanted is taken on my main server so I'm SOL. The only way to do this is if I server jumped somewhere where Ethereal is taken but the name I want isn't. The odds of that are looking slim to none.
