its two. people are doing the order wrong and getting 288 or w/e.

PEMDAS. Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Add Subtract.

Parenthesis. (9+3) = (12)

48/2(12)

Exponents. None

Multiplication. 2(12) = 24

48/24

Division. 48/24 = 2.

Answer is two, anyone that says otherwise is stupid.

Actually...

Because it's not clear whether or not the (9+3) belongs in the numerator or denominator. Most calculators and computers would not put that in the denominator without a second set of brackets around this and the 2, and thus would give 288. Nobody is wrong or right (unless they're saying something other than 2 or 288). The question is ambiguous. This isn't even about PEMDAS. Even with the correct order of operation, you can still get both answers depending on how you interpret the problem

I trust this guy.

Multiplication doesn't trump division though, and since you're working left to right with both multiplication and division it would be:

48÷2(9+3)

48÷2(12)

24(12)

288

in for more rage.

Sorry but I think you may be wrong on this. According to pemdas when it's multiplying/diving you go from left to right so on this you would divide 48 by 2 first.

terms inside brackets
exponents and roots
multiplication and division
addition and subtraction

Multi/division are on the same line, and it seems to make sense.

yea, it makes perfect sense because it would make things that are equal unequal otherwise.

For example, dividing by 2 is the same as multiplying by .5

If going left to right, you get the same answer, regardless.

If going Multi then division, you'd get a diff answer from an equivalent term.

Order of operations dat ***.

Add dat ***in the parentheses. Nine plus three is TOTALLY twelve.

Multiplication/Division comes second, reading from left to right:
48÷2=24

Then, 24(12) is left. Answer obvious. It's like a gross, but, like, TIMES TWO. 288. The number of sex.

Ah, yea my bad. I'm rusty on the maths. I wasn't really thinking about it when I first glanced, I just divided 48 by 2 at first. The way it's written the answer is 2. After calculating whats inside the parenthesis the next thing to do is 2(12). If the 48 divided by 2 was written like a fraction then it would be 288.

48÷2(9+3) = 48x.5(9+3)

48÷2(12) = 48x.5(12)

Going multi > divison

48/24 = 2

Going left to right

24 x 12 = 288

Going w/ the equiv term
48 x .5 x 12 = 288

I'm going w/ 288, not 2

Left to right actually makes sense since multiplication and division are pretty much equal terms.

Going multi > division always is going to change your answer based on how you have the question written

For example, making those 2 equal equations have different answers.
