I've seen some very rude JP players on Odin, ranging from being just downright rude to Americans to things as simple as /sea comments that say {English} {Party} {No thanks.} But I've also seen some very nice JP players, too. I think a lot of it depends on what you are doing (No, I will not do Nyzul Isle with JP players, simply because last time we tried we could not get them to understand that they needed to stand at the lamps and turn them on. There is no auto-translate for 'stay there and hit the switch in these different orders.') But you can hardly blame JP players for being rude to Americans when most Americans are jerks to JP players. It goes both ways.
Here's the thing: I'll be nice to you if you are nice to me, and I don't give a darn what nationality you are.
A JP player earlier today/late yesterday overpaid me for an acid bolt quiver by about 16k. When I sent him a /tell to ask if it was a mistake, he was very nice to me and I had no problems sending him his money back. He was nicer about it than most Americans would have been.

Regardless of the fact that most JP are nicer with my experiences, I've had some terrible ones, one dude spammed me for an hour simply for examining him. I even apologized and he persisted. Ended up calling a GM, of course the GM did nothing even though the jp sent me 35 friend requests and continously spammed me with /t loljp button

I have always been careful what I bid on the AH because I know the chance is small that someone would give me my money back, in fact, I don't see why they should, it's my own problem for bidding too high and being careless. If I was in a good mood, maybe I'd return the money, and if the person explained him/herself, maybe I'd feel more inclined to return at least a part of it. But then, if it happened to me, and someone returned the money, I'd feel more inclined to do it myself for someone else later on, and overall, even IRL, the more people are nice to me, the more I feel like returning the favor to other, totally unrelated people. My mind works like that. I have a lot of moral principles I try to follow, but none that are related to gil, so it would definitely depend a lot on my current mood. People should be careful about what they bid for on an auction... That's why it's called an auction, because you bid on stuff and then you have to take responsibility and pay, even if your bid was a mistake. In fact, it's the WHOLE FRICKIN POINT of an auction... Drowsiness + auctions = regrets. Do the maths.
On a side note, a good way to fix this is to keep all your money on a mule that serves only the purpose of a bank account. Only withdraw what you need. And make fool-proof purchases. That's if you have too much money in the first place.
Edit: Seriously, IRL, do you see a lot of people walking around IN THE STREETS with a wallet full of cash?

Well, there is that. In my experience on Odin, American players are generally a lot ruder than JP (I also obviously don't get to see how the JP on Odin are treated by the majority of NA), but even still, a lot of JP are just plain racist, ignoring perfectly polite /tells (for whatever reason, even trying to help them) simply because I can't write in magic squiggles. That's the main reason I still try to be nice and get along with everyone I meet in game, no matter what nationality. Because even though I know there's a damn good chance that the JP I'm speaking to is going to ignore me for not being JP, I refuse to do the same in return.

A few years back, i was in a LS that did sky, and had a bank for all the sky drops. The person who held the LS bank ended up getting hacked one day and the person who hacked it tossed a ton of r/ex stuff and bid all the gil the character had on a single item, it was like a 10k item and around 6 mil was bid on it.
I sent a tell to the person explaining the situation , and the person just said tough.
I hope that person has something bad happen to them in rl, i really do.

For a long while, I figured if I was lucky enough to have this happen to me, the person buying the item would just have to cut their losses. One night, in a haste to buy some hands, i bought 20k hands for 200k. I checked the history till it popped and /t'd the seller telling him my problem. 30 minutes later he /t'd me back and apologized for being afk. He promptly sent me back the overpayment, not withholding any as a "nice guy" fee if you will. Gotta say I learned a little bit from that.

I believe is one of those things that you may could or couldn't do, but I feel pity for those ppl making the mistake who later get angry because they don't get the gil back.
However I agree with others if I were asked nicely, I will return it once, a second time... it's to much spoiling I think.
Sincerely.
Ken.

This happened to my friend, she bid 900k on I believe a 20k item. The man was JP and apparently afk, they kinda got swamped with our linkshell's pleas to return the gil to her. The night rolls over and no response. The next day she /t's me that he had returned it and had left or something that prior night. I have never made any huge overbids. It has happened here and there, but I'm too poor to buy expensive stuff, so I just took the hit and moved on with a few mumbled swear words... and wearing the missbid item for weeks saying " I'm gonna make this damn thing worth that 50k D:<"

mistakes happen.. i always say think of what you would do if roles were reversed.. how you would feel.. i wouldnt hesitate to give the gil back.. im not gonna attack anyone that would keep.. i might try to talk to them.. but at the end of the day its thier decision.. this game can be rough at times.. if someone has it happen and someone doesnt return money they will be less inclined to return if it happens again.. just got to pray if your not gonna return the gil that karma isnt waiting on the other side if the roles end up reversed

It would depend on the severity of it. If it was a 1k item and they bid 10k it's a 9k lesson and i am assuring that person wont make a stupid mistake again if i keep the gil. If it was a million gil for a 100k item i would return the gil absolutely. I've never overbid on anything as i always double check but, I did screw up and almost sell 249 Ordelle Bronznepiece's to someone for the cost of 149 (a 1 million gil mistake) and thankfully she said something and let me correct the trade. She could have very well traded and I'd never even realized it. It was late and I was sleepy. I'll never forget that act of kindness and I will ALWAYS double check my double checks now.

Nope, I would keep it, having said that I put up a 400k scroll at 40k (tired, mistake) and someone got it for that. End of, my fault so I took the hit.

I returned gil before. I put a dark staff on AH and someone big an odd amount on it, over 3M. Got a /tell later from the person saying he big all his gil on accident. I returned the money and he gave me gil to cover the af fee. I can understand what he did, I catch myself pressing up to many times and all my gill shows up for bid.

This has already been debated, the way "xxx examines you" is wrote in Japanese is kinda offensive. That's why some JP players don't like that. Keep in mind that your culture != japanese culture. And starring at someone in some culture can be considered really offensive.

I have and would do it again.
If I put something for sale at 25000 and I get 250000 for the item it is obviously a mistake. If the person sends me a /tell I would gladly look as see what happened. Sometimes when clearing out my DB I might not notice, but if you can still see it on the AH (or this site now that I'm thinking of it) I will repay the difference.
There have been plenty of times that I have bid 10k for a 1k item and I kick myself of it. Back in the day I would put something up for 100k instead of 1m because I was not used to needing to putting something up for 7 digits. Once a friend bought something so we arranged a payment plan and the other time I just got lucky.

I would give it back. If I couldn't get in touch with them I'd just send it to them. Morels is what is boils down to. Sad that people think that just becuse there is no punishment for something, that is is ok.

I would return the gil without a doubt. Some people take this game too seriously and would probably be mortified and quit the game if i didn't return the gil. I don't fancy being responsible for someone quiting the game. Just a matter of whether the person is decent or not, you have no right (that i know of) to harrass a player if the gil isn't returned though.

Well, next day i log on and go check MH and see 1.5m for SH in there, of course I was excited, but, I was willing to give the gil back, so I looked for buyer.
Was not online, so I just figured i'd wait to see if he messaged me first, sure enough a few hours later he was online. He /telled me saying "I want my money back I meant to buy a SH+1 and accidently bought the NQ" I told him it was NP, i'd be glad to reimburse him for the difference I had SH on AH for (500k) vs.the price he bid on (1.5M), which would be 1m.
Well, he starts this crap about "SH price is only 350-400k now" (it had dropped within the near 2 days since mine was sold, and due to overflow on AH) Basically what he told me was that since price had dropped to 350k, That I owed him 1,150,000.. anyways to make a long story short, I just sent him his 1M, he continued to threatin to call a GM/and tell everyone I stole gil from him... I /blist and have never heard anything about it since...
Was I wrong about this whole deal? I don't think I was, but please advise me @_@ lol if someone acted like that I'd /blist them and kept the gil i just wait if they act like an *** i say cya later if they ask nicely i return it

I'm not sure what you are trying to say, the more kinder players I have met over my ffxi travels, are usually japanese to begin with, and I'm dead serious when I say this, I have a jp friend and we message each other everyday with good morning and good nights and have small conversations, despite his english not being to good haha Let me restate my comment. I never said I hated JP people or dislike them. In fact I have a very good JP friend who always gives me hughugs, ('-'*) but if u overbid on an item and they are JP, then good luck getting it back. Thats what I was sayin. Most are greedy and rude and act like they dont know what your saying when in full reality they do! Its like that Waiting movie when the foreigners don't tip well, lol.
I putted a Platinum Beastcoin in AH for 8k and someone by the looks of it mistakenly bidded 60k on it. I send him/her a tell in game, though s/he didnt ever responded, i told the best i could that i understood the mistake and send her back 52k. People may call me dumb for things like this. So i wonder, would you return the money?
