I can't sleep!!!! Don't you guys just hate it when that happens? It's like I have a sudden burst of energy right now... I swear I'm not even this energized during the day.
(-_-)

Has this ever happened to you guys?
Any tips on how to make myself go to sleep?

Was thinking of working out but that will just give me more energy

Happens to me most nights. Even if I'm really tired, as soon as I try to sleep my brain just goes into overdrive and won't stop thinking lol, can go on for hours.

Get drunk
Take sleeping pills
Spank it until you're shooting blanks

Not necessarily all together, but you can do all three if you want!

Those are serious answers btw <_> it's what I do.. Sitting in a really hot bath (like so hot you have to lower in slowly, just shy of first degree burns) helps as well..

To wear out my mind I've recently started playing Tetris on my phone while I'm laying in bed gettin ready to go to sleep.. I find that the concentrating trying to always one up my last highest score helps..

If there's a series of show you know like the back of your hand, put a few episodes on.. Your mind can concentrate on what's going on in the show, without having to sit up and look at the screen.. Basically just watching the show by sound, in a weird way, it helps.

What helps put you to sleep?

As I said on there, walm milk/hot chocolate helps me. Also, more recentally, playing minesweeper to death is somewhat helping. Though I keep developing the mentality of "next time I win a game, I'll go to sleep"...

Thanks Slip, I love the first two options except I have work in the morning, which is now in approximately 3 hours!!! Fffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuu lol

The ironic part is Videogames and TV tend to keep me awake. I tend to be really engaged. I remember I used to play Halo 2 for 30+ hours straight! lol TV shows might work only if they are super boring though.

I hate it when you get a really good piece of gear, then LS event ends and you realize it's 2AM and you have to get up early but you're too excited to sleep and end up falling asleep at 6AM. =/

Try eating low sugar carbohydrates a little while before you go to bed, by that I mean something like wholemeal bread sammich/toast, porridge, cereal (things like weetabix, not sugary crap like cheerios).

If it's high in sugar it will have the opposite effect so really make sure it's low in sugar like the above options.

The idea being is that the carbohydrate breaks down into insulin which enters your bloodstream at a steady rate (sugary foods break down fast and enter your bloodstream rq and give you a burst of energy) and clears out the amino acids that compete with tryptophan, the sleep inducing amino acid. As far as I can remember, protein can have the opposite effect so try and make it carbs only, HOWEVER the catch is that the tryptophan itself tends to be found in protein based foods, so you need to take in the foods that have a high tryptophan/protein ratio. The good news is that milk is the best food source for this with a high ratio of tryptophan to protein.

Personally I have toast an honey an a glass of milk before bed an it works fairly well, just don't eat tooo much on a regular basis unless your gonna do more exercise to make up for it lol :3

Reading my physics textbook puts me right into sleep mode. :-(

Also, I have some nighttime chamomile and mint tea that gets me all relaxed and cozy, and I make sure my bed is welcoming and snuggly so I want to go there. Flannel sheets aren't considered luxurious by any means but they are comforting and inviting for sleep, and a thick, soft blanket tossed over the top works wonders just for being comforting and cuddly.

Try not to drink caffeine after 7pm or so, try to stop doing exciting things an hour or so before you want to sleep, try making your room as dark as possible (we have a thick blanket tacked over our window in the bedroom), and if none of that works, listen to soothing music before bed.

I try NOT to take any sleeping pills or whatnot, because I refuse to be dependent on medicine. I will take Nyquil if and only if I am sick, and as soon as I'm better it's back to no medicine to sleep. That's just a personal preference though, so if you need to, find a sleeping pill that works for you.

I'd be wary of using alcohol to induce sleep particularly as part of a routine.

"Alcohol is used extensively as a sleep aid in the general population. In a recent survey,[1] 28% of insomniacs indicated that they had used alcohol to help them fall asleep. Occasional insomniacs used alcohol for an average of 3.6 nights/month, while chronic insomniacs used alcohol for an average of 6.8 nights/month. An equal number of occasional insomniacs and chronic insomniacs (67%) described alcohol as an effective or very effective method to induce sleep.

When ingested by normal individuals, alcohol leads to a more rapid induction of sleep. It also increases non-REM sleep and reduces REM sleep during the first portion of the night. However, alcohol is metabolized rapidly and blood concentrations are negligible by the middle of the night for most individuals who have a few drinks prior to bedtime, often resulting in withdrawal symptoms thereafter. These may include shallow sleep and multiple awakenings, REM rebound associated with nightmares or vivid dreams, sweating, and general activation.[2,3] Therefore, although alcohol may be effective in sleep induction, it impairs sleep during the second half of the night and can lead to a reduction in overall sleep time. As a result, it can also be associated with daytime somnolence. It is of interest that alcohol's negative effects on sleep are even observed when it is ingested in the late afternoon.

Insomnia is often a chronic condition, and chronic reliance on alcohol increases the risk of development of alcohol dependence and alcoholism. Alcoholism itself is also associated with the complaints of poor sleep characterized by prolonged time to fall asleep, multiple awakenings, and decreased delta and REM sleep.[4] Sleep changes can persist during months or years of abstinence, and recent studies indicate that certain alterations in sleep architecture, as well as subjective sleep complaints, predict relapse to alcoholism.[5] A variety of sleep disorders can be responsible for insomnia; these include sleep-related breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Alcohol increases the severity of the syndrome, and may cause snoring and induce apneas in individuals without a history of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.[6]

In conclusion, alcohol is a commonly used substance for sleep induction. However, it is a poor choice as a hypnotic because it can disrupt sleep even further, may lead to alcohol dependence and alcoholism, and may intensify sleep-related breathing disturbances."

Yeah, I only do when I have trouble sleeping, which is rarely.

EDIT: And, that study appears to be on people with full-fledged insomnia. That is a little differrent that just having random trouble going to sleep.

If I am having sinus trouble, I will sit in the shower to steam myself, and have fallen asleep frequently doing so.
