What's a topic ban? What's taboo and what's not? Why are the topics taboo? I know some topics, such as repeat threads and such. I'm just wonderin. There're topics that involve taboo subjects such as racism and religion and government that aren't taboo.

It means you cannot post in the thread anymore. Banned from the thread (a.k.a. topic).

Topic ban is removing a certain person from continuing to post in a given topic, but that's all.

Moderators are allowed to hand them out based on their own judgment.

Of course we have to be respectful, etc, about what's happening, but we can't just sit here mourning all day.
I do not have to be *** respectful. Seriously, *** Japan.
Are you Serious?
Yes. The only reason so many people give a *** is because Japan is SUCH A COOL PLACE. If this happened ANYWHERE else, people would say "Oh that sucks" and be over it in a day.
There is definitely some truth to that statment. But it doesn't apply to everyone. Why do you hate Japan so much?
I never said I hate Japan.
Define for me what *** Japan means?

Give him a break. He is Canadian. He has a right to be a ***. Funny accents. Bad Food. Cold wear all year round.

Wait! There's a Can..a..da?! When the heck did this happen and where's it at?!

ohhhhh you make me remind, montreal was a "flood" few days ago.We had like 1-2 feet of water in the streets.Me and my hubby decided to go buy a PCI adapter for our other pc.Usually its a 15 mins walk, that day took 2hr +.We were totally wet and to give us some boost, we start making jokes like: "ok so we mario and luigi trying to save the princess peach, let's pass trough this flooding adventure!" we lost our head that day.....
Montreal players? thought they were a myth... xD

maybe longer than a week?

Your text to link here...

If you've been following the reports out of Japan at all, you'd be foolish to think FFXI will return in a week, or even two weeks.

FFXI will probably return around May 1st, and even that's iffy. If it's sooner than May 1st, I'll be very surprised.
Yes, this is my own opinion, based on observation and critical thinking only. S-E hasn't made any official announcement (to my knowledge), and I'm not holding my breath waiting for one, either.

Best advice: Expect May 1st, and find something else to do besides sit around anxiously waiting for FFXI to return.

I have read through most of this, and i have to laugh each time ppl suggest moving the servers from one earthquake risk area into another. Isn't California sitting right over 3 fault lines (?).

If they are going to shift servers to the U.S. then need to send them to Nebraska, Iowa, or any area in the middle of the U.S> that has a minimal chance of being impacted by earth quakes or other extreme natural disasters. Yes there are tornado's in that area but it is easier to tornado proof someplace then earthquake proof.

Ppl just need to wait and let japan get back on their "feet" and see what happens.

If you have been following the news in the US, the servers will be down forever.

If you've been following news in Japan or just general news about TEPCO from on-site sources then you wouldn't think they would be down longer than two weeks.

Ameriiiiiiiiicaaaaaaaaaa! So bored we make things up to give us something to cry about! yeeeaaaaaaaaah!

The only way I'd think May 1st is if the servers were in Sendai or nearby and they took 40+ days to recover and move them. Other than that I think almost 50 days downtime for a business like SE is extreme.

If I had to guess as well I'd say max 3 weeks, most likely 2 weeks

Square Enix Headquarters is in Shibuya, Tokyo. Which is where the servers are.

Server =/= reactor... the reactors that have been damaged will be shut down permanently because it would cost more to fix them then build new ones.

the servers and probably most of SE is down so the power they would used is available for other resources.

2003 pixels but going on 13 pages here of raging. What's the deal? They don't care about customer service or customers (they brag about banning thousands a month right on their site) I'm pretty sure SE couldnt care less about this considering the other things that they're dealing with.

Hmmmmm.... do not see a lot of raging going on...just ppl exchanging ideas on how reports out of U.S. and japan are different, speculating on when the power grid in japan will return to normal and when the servers can be up and running again. Ohh not to throw in some musings on how many ppl will actually return to the game once things are "back to normal"

Nah, it's all raging. Atleast, this is how the British rage. With well structured discussion.

I seriously doubt they have enough servers that are powerful enough to replace those that were in japan

I completely agree. You dont have a massive complex with enough server room to "backup" a game like FF just sitting around for years on end in the event that something happens to japans power grid. Not only is that beyond financially irresponsible, but no company in the world would have that foresight, or care that much about anyone who might in 10 years leave the game because they didn't have a multi million dollar back up for a video game.

No matter how much money this game makes, it is still just a game. Not a hospital, or a national bank or a military facility charged with defending the planet against hostile invading aliens....

The japanese kinda have to hustle...their power structure is based off nuclear power. They don't have the natural power resources other countries have. so if ppl are going to get anywhere or do their jobs they have to have reliable power

They have also spent time creating plans of action in case something like this happened, because sooner or later it was bound to happen.....pretty sure nothing like that was in place when katrina came through.

I keep hearing everyone say "it's just a game people" blah blh blsh. Yer, it is a game, a social game at that, but to Japan, it's more. It's a part of their economy. I'm sure they want all of their businesses up and running to bring in revenue that will help rebuild the region. The longer their businesses are down, not just SE, the longer their recovery will take. I may be a bit selfish in my reasoning of the servers coming back up but I also understand the benefit of it for them too. I heard today on the news some of their automakers would be shutdown for the duration of the year too so other industries from them, like the gaming industry, is going to have to be stable because the burden on them helping the economy bounce back just multiplied.

Everything is going to take a hit in their business no doubt (barring the people that are helping of course but even then the resources that are being used will eventually catch up to them also)

I tend to agree with this even though I'm feeling a bit selfish

The only thing that got me away from this game was after 6-7 years of playing, my core friends slowly all left it. But once your friends leave or go to a different game and you join up with some of them there, things are alright again. I guess the level breaks annonucement above 75 helped me along too, it helped me realize that I played the game for my friends, not for 6 years of gear and numbers of stats/levels in pixels to wind up as useless in the end. Then trust me, you won't have a problem uninstalling this archaic crap if you force yourself to move onto something else that interests you.
