The guy who posted this was dressed up like a Touhou character. Combined with the sheer wtf factor, I'm 34% sure that this was taking a jab at the other "PURL HARBUR KARMA1!11!" folks.

Also Canadians don't count, you know this.
You're the ones to blame. After all, it's in retaliation of Pearl Harbor. THEY NUKED US FIRST conspiracy theory: USA caused the earthquake You didn't know?I KNEW IT

Guys, I'm pretty sure if the servers are shut down for an appreciable amount of time, they'll be pro-rating the charges and/or issuing refunds. It makes good business sense regardless of the country.
Turning it into a "us English" swipe at the Japanese is unnecessary right now.

And I thought I lacked compassion for other people :/

I live in Tokyo. Tokyo is perfectly fine and the nuclear power plants aren't a threat to us.
The problem is with so many power plants shut down, there is a power shortage in Northeast Japan. Tokyo hasn't been very affected, but if the power shortage gets worse then Tokyo will need to reduce power use, which would mean shutting down the servers. But things are ok for now. But that could change of course.

try 2: anyone know where the servers are physically located? (like a town) it would be interesting to try and see what kind of damage they were dealing with in regards to the servers. Hell, it could just be that the area they are in right now has lots of power problems and they need to be moved.

But if I did, and they shutdown the servers for a significant period of time, regardless of the circumstances, I'd expect some sort of compensation. I'd expect any company to do so, but I know SE won't.
Why is it ok for them to be greedy but not for me?
If it was a significant amount of time you can just close your account and reactivate it at a future date. schimple. But as you don't even play, what's it to you anyway.

That second sentence doesn't even make sense. Not all of you live in Japan, so what's this tsunami to you anyway.

Absolutely, they should also get to experience what a magnitude 8.8 quake is like first hand, or get to stand in front of the incoming tsunami knowing that everything you have is just gonna be swept away.
Several thousand dead and people worrying about a few dollars, that is more than sad, it's totally pathetic.

Honestly, I'm glad they're shutting the servers down. They absolutely need to keep their power for recovery and rebuilding efforts. I don't care if they ever turn them back on. The lives of all the people in Japan mean more than some game. We can make do.

Everyone learned about it at some point. Personally I think it is overrated.
Frankly that ***aggravates me. The whole why should I care thing.
You live in a world with people and use benefit from their labor. If you do not want to give a ***about anyone then please stop leeching.
Decode:
People showing kindness to me makes me aggravated. Why should I care about people, who care for me. I mean, I live in a world which exists for my benefit. Therefore, don't be kind to me 'cuz I hates you all.
Dang! Sounds like you need a hug man, or a man hug!

This whole 'Japan deserved it' Pearl Harbor defense thing going on is really the most infuriating thing I've heard in a while.
I know we live in a world FULL of racists, religious nuts, over-patriotic patriots, general idiots, etc. But It's just so unbelievable when you see it straight up, and in large numbers in the midst of such a situation.

Safety of your fellow man > Your characters and items protected > Your $13 > Your need to play a video game.
With that in mind, I'm perfectly fine with the choice of having the servers shut down if need be.

This sorta thing is precisely why eula's and contracts have liability clauses about "acts of god" and their results. They don't need to issue refunds.
