Japan Earthquake/Tsunami
@BBCBreaking via Twitter said: 1745 GMT: A 50cm-high (20in) tsunami has awept along Mexico's north-west coast, AFP reports. @BBCBreaking via Twitter said: 1747 GMT: CNN correspondent Kyung Lah tweets: "I've gone 3 miles in 3 hours. Seriously. This is how bad it is in Tokyo right now." @BBCBreaking via Twitter said: 1751 GMT: All Japanese ports have reportedly been closed. "It's a big mess. All discharge operations are suspended in the area," a Japanese ship broker told the Reuters news agency. Another broker said: "Most or all coal stocks will be washed out at many of the coal-fired power plants. Ports will be closed at least for a short time until damage assessments can take place." Edit: If anyone can find the raw videos of the earthquake on Youtube please post them here, the BBC is only showing brief clips of them. I've looked but naturally they are titled in Japanese, making them pretty hard to find for an English bloke. Dale, thanks for keeping us all update. I'm at work and this is the easiest site for me to access atm.

You're welcome. @BBCBreaking via Twitter said: 1757: Ali Attas, a Kenyan journalist living in Yokohama, has told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme about the moment the earthquake struck: "It was just an incredible scary feeling, the intensity started increasing. When I started moving in the room, I could not stand on my feet. I was beginning to hit the wall... I am not going to sleep tonight." Balkisu Saidu, a Nigerian studying in central Tokyo, said she had been standing in a queue for a bus for nearly three hours, trying to get home. Also, Thanks Chuuuuu. @BBCBreaking via Twitter said: 1801 GMT: Scientists have said the earthquake ranked as the fifth-largest in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than one that devastated the city of Christchurch in New Zealand last month. "The energy radiated by this quake is nearly equal to one month's worth of energy consumption" in the United States, Brian Atwater of the US Geological Survey told the Associated Press. Brb, I'm going to take a short break to get some tea, I've been sat here since I woke up. I'll post any updates en masse when I get back.

KGO Radio tweets: "Crescent City OES: All docks are gone after first surge, 35 boats crushed, water starting to fill harbor parking lot." Thanks Degs, that just shows how much of Japan was effected by this, even by a minor amount.
Oh, something to note; the Earthquake was so powerful, it was picked up by experts in Scotland. Clearly that plant failing doesn't need to happen, I think Japan has had enough Nuclear explosions or such for the earth's existance. |
