Japan Earthquake/Tsunami
Quote: 1729: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the US has to answer questions about "the costs and the risks" of nuclear power. "We get 20% of our energy right now in the United States from nuclear power," she said. The only thing that comes to mind is *** Hilary Clinton. Hate her with a passion. Japanese officials have stated the death toll is approximately 3600 now, with another 10k missing.

Ontario nuclear plant leaks demineralized water On 73,000 litres of Deminerlaized water leaked, result of a pump seal failure... Wow.. with all the talk in all, how is all the other Nuclear power stations near by everyone on here, are doing...... damn world is going to hell in a handbasket...if you ask me... =/ Offline

I don't mind her, but that's such a *** HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE thing to say. "Hey guys, we need to burn more coal and oil for power! *** nuclear!" Unless she is really suggesting solar/hydro/wind power... I hate how skeptical this country is about nuclear power. These look like standardized pumps, just only bigger..for nuclear power stations. He told Congress: "We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures." Quote: 1900: Mr Jackzo said the high radiation levels would make it very difficult for workers to get near the reactor. "The doses they could experience would potentially be lethal doses in a very short period of time," he said, but added that the NRC's information on the situation was "very limited". Quote: 1933: Yukiya Amano, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has said he plans to fly to Japan on Thursday to get further information about the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The BBC's Kerry Skyring says Mr Edano is under pressure to demonstrate his agency is informed and able to communicate a clear picture of what is happening. "At daily press briefings he has been unable to explain why the information provided is so sketchy. As well as flying to Japan to what he says are high level meetings he is creating two teams who will also go there, one with expertise in nuclear safety, the other in radiation protection," our correspondent adds. Asked if the situation at Fukushima was now out of control, Mr Edano said: "It is very serious. The government and operators are doing everything they can. I hope their efforts will be successful." Quote: 2010: More on the power line being laid to the Fukushima Daiichi plant to help restore the reactor cooling systems: Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) spokesman Naoki Tsunoda has said it is almost complete, and that engineers plan to test it "as soon as possible", according to the Associated Press. Reviving the electric-powered pumps might allow the engineers to finaly cool the overheated reactors and spent fuel storage ponds. Reviving the electric-powered pumps might allow the engineers to finaly cool the overheated reactors and spent fuel storage ponds. Quote: 2014: A special police van equipped with a water cannon - normally used to disperse rioters - meanwhile arrived at the power station early on Thursday. Tepco plans to use the cannon to spray water onto reactor 4's spent fuel storage pond. The cannon is thought to be strong enough to allow engineers to remain a safe distance from the complex and limit their exposure to radiation. Quote: 2019: The US military will also fly one of its Global Hawk unmanned high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft over the site, possibly later on Thursday, to take photographs of the inside the building which houses reactor 4, Japanese government sources have told the Kyodo news agency. Global Hawks are already being used to survey the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami Quote: 2027: Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has said it is also concerned about the spent fuel storage pool inside the building housing reactor 3 at Fukushima Daiichi. The pools at both reactors 3 and 4 are reportedly boiling - there may not even be any water left in reactor 4's pool - and unless the spent fuel rods are cooled down, they could emit large quantities radiation. Radioactive steam was earlier said to be coming from reactor 3's pool. If cooling operations did not proceed well, the situation would "reach a critical stage in a couple of days", an agency official told the Kyodo news agency. Hey not everyone knows the different grades of water. And that deminerlaized would only be used as a backup in the primary.
You should've seen the article about a potential radioactive fire a few years back cause there was a small fire in the air conditioning at a reactor plant... Quote: 2035: US officials have concluded that the Japanese warnings have been insufficient, and that, deliberately or not, they have understated the potential threat of what is taking place inside the nuclear facility, according to the New York Times. Gregory Jaczko, the chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, earlier said he believed that all the water in the spent fuel pool at reactor 4 had boiled dry, leaving fuel rods stored there exposed. "We believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures," he told a Congressional committee. looks like the US is gonna get in a pissing contest w/the Japanese over the handling of the reactors...../sigh Quote: 2038: Experts warn that if radiation levels become too high, workers at the plant would not only be prevented from approaching reactor 4's spent fuel pond, but also the adjacent reactors, which also have malfunctioning cooling systems Quote: 2046: Japan's foreign ministry has asked foreign diplomats and government officials to remain calm and "accurately convey information provided by Japanese authorities concerning the plant", according to NHK television. Let the pissing commence Asura.Catastrophe said: Bahamut.Milamber said: Caitsith.Neonracer said: Reading and keeping up with everything here.. I saw this on Sypmatico's front page... I was not trying to offend you or make some stuff up, I was saying that this was also going on over here, and I'm shaking my head saying more Canadian Dramalama...LOL IDK... Also in the Canadian news....
Small earthquake rattles western Quebec Really??? This is small peanuts.... >> seriously?
lame: NYTimes said: More foreign nations on Wednesday issued cautionary advice to their citizens in Japan. Serbia, Croatia and Belgium told their citizens to leave the country, while France, Australia and the Philippines urged their nationals to either leave Japan or move south, away from the stricken nuclear plant. China continued a mass evacuation of its citizens from the earthquake and tsunami zone begun earlier in the week, while the French Embassy asked Air France to provide planes to ferry its citizens out of Japan. A number of foreign airlines have suspended flights to Tokyo and have shifted operations to cities farther south. not so lame: NYTimes said: The United States ambassador to Japan, John V. Roos, issued a statement on Wednesday addressing the growing public unease over the nuclear crisis. American officials agreed with the Japanese government’s advice urging people living within about 12 miles of the damaged plant to evacuate, and within about 18 miles to remain indoors. “Let me also address reports of very low levels of radiation outside the evacuation area detected by U.S. and Japanese sensitive instrumentation,” Mr. Roos said in the statement. “This bears very careful monitoring, which we are doing. If we *** that the radiation poses a threat to public health, we will share that information and provide relevant guidance immediately.” It's kind of sad. I work in a Pharmacy, and I guess it was on the news about taking Potassium iodide... so now at least 10 times today i've been asked if we carry it. And how the government doesn't want people to have it because they'd rather spend money on bomb shelters? It's bringing out the crazy people but at least it's giving us a few laughs :/

It's not even the fact that it's nothing, it goes into a system that isn't even connected to another system that connects to the reactor. Its not even "potentially" radioactive. It's a pathetic excuse to piggy back on a real crisis to call into question the safety of such technology. Cuz, you know, Canada is having earthquake and tsunami problems n junk. I know, my sentaments exactly.. its just another ride on safetys part, b.c well, " With all the Disaster Japan has atm..yada yada..we might as well make some news as well.. and make some attention, b.c we have almost the same facility as theirs.." Why are ppl bandwagoning it, and trying to milk it....??? scoffs... Five of the six reactors at Fukushima Daiichi plant were designed by GE.... Mark1 reactor design are know to have issues and design flaws and even some GE quit, because of the design flaws and disagreement with GE about Mark1 reactors.
GE is saying that they are not responsible, because the reactors have been modified. Fukushima: Mark 1 Nuclear Reactor Design Caused GE Scientist To Quit In Protest Quote: "The problems we identified in 1975 were that, in doing the design of the containment, they did not take into account the dynamic loads that could be experienced with a loss of coolant," Bridenbaugh told ABC News in an interview. "The impact loads the containment would receive by this very rapid release of energy could tear the containment apart and create an uncontrolled release." Were they GE Pumps/generators.. and were they modifed, after they were installed??? If they were modified after.. that would be like me purchasing a brand new pump or a motor for my car and, right away, b.c of modifications... you're def breaking the warranty. |
