Japan Earthquake/Tsunami

I mean, c'mon, wtf were they thinking. That's just asking for problems. It made things very cost effective for the russians when they needed to run on something like a low fuel consumption process or poorly enriched uranium. It's extremely costly and very demanding to enrich Uranium to 99.9%, which while don't quote me on the exact decimal, is the rate at which the United States enriches theirs, and why they can even operate PWR/BWRs. If you look at Iran and North Korea to see how taxing it is to enrich Uranium, even to a grade useful, the Soviets felt it necessary to shortcut that roadblock during the Cold War. Ya, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like using graphite moderators instead of water allows you to get more 'bang for your buck' from the same neutron source, but it's also just ridiculously unstable. So you can use cheap-o, ***fuel, but you're prone to runaway problems. Go Soviet Union! Valefor.Ryukuro said: Hold down F11 I'm going to hell for this lol Bismarck.Josiahfk said: lol You're terrible Ryukuro /smile and at the effort to lighten the mood but > < Not that terrible =P I seen a joke just earlier that IS terrible but, kinda tasteless... "Fairy Liquid have donated a million bottles of detergent to the tsunami appeal, they heard that there were a lot of Asians washing up on the beaches" yeah.............. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0147: The legal limit for radioactivity has been passed at the Fukushima plant, AFP says, quoting Japan's Kyodo news agency. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0152: Yaroslav Shtrombakh, a Russian nuclear expert, has told the Associated Press that it is unlikely that the Japanese plant will suffer a meltdown like the one in 1986 at Chernobyl, when a reactor exploded and sent a cloud of radiation over much of Europe. That reactor, unlike the reactors at Fukushima, was not housed in a sealed container. (Plus, based on what Catastrophe is explaining here, it seems to be designed in a fundamentally different way that suppresses the sort of problems which occurred at Chernobyl.) BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0202: More on the higher radioactivity level at the nuclear plant. The Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) has informed the government of an "emergency situation" but this does not mean an immediate threat to human health, the company adds. A similar rise in radiation levels occurred after the company released radioactive steam from another reactor to let go of pressure. On that occasion too, the company was obliged to inform the government of an "emergency situation". BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0155: A strong earthquake occurred off Japan's eastern coast at 0126 GMT today, the US Geological Survey confirms. It was closer to Tokyo than Friday's quake. Buildings swayed in the capital, AP says. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0157: This new quake measured 6.2 and was centred about 179km (111 miles) east of the Japanese capital, at a depth of 24.5km. Edit: Oops, fixed. Idk why but I was thinking like 2 hours ago, that there would be another Earthquake soon...
BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0225: The unsafe level of radioactivity at the Fukushima plant is being created by the plant's No 3 reactor, AFP says, quoting the Japanese government. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0228: Just a reminder: cooling systems failed at the No 3 reactor hours after the explosion at the No 1 reactor. So, completely separate reactor. Looks like it's going through what no. 1 went through last night. Screw ya'll. this is going to lol's thread. Can we quit with the shitty meme's? Definitely too soon for that. This is supposed to be an informative thread.
Quote: 0232: The plant operator says the top of the fuel rods is 3 metres above water - AFP, quoting Kyodo. [quote0235: More than 200 bodies found at Higashimatsushima, police say - AFP. First time I've seen that placename mentioned][/quote]
As for that Japan People Finder, it's not entirely reliable and more of a last resort if said person in mind doesn't have any other way to confirm their safety (Twitter, blogs etc.).
I realize that it's pretty morbid to single out people of a certain interest, but here's a couple lists of confirmed safe survivors for animu/mango/vidya nerds. Irrelevant? Who knows, but to some of us neckbeards, this can be of interest to those who follow names in the industry. 1 2 3 If their name isn't listed, this doesn't mean that they're dead. Could have their hands full or just have no means to confirm yet (or feel the need to, 90% of these guys probably weren't even close). And as a response to the disgusting display of Facebook users screaming about how Japan deserved it, don't let it get to you. Type in "japan" for Openbook. For every idiot hiding behind their twisted idea of karma, you'll get three more showing their sympathy and prayers. And... alot of news reposts, but let's ignore that. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0248: For those of you with Google Earth capability, there's a new website with high-definition satellite images of the affected areas. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0314: Tepco, which runs the stricken nuclear power plans, is updating its website regularly with technical briefings on the status of the reactors. BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0315: In its latest update , Tepco clarifies the problem with Reactor 3: "High Pressure Coolant Injection System of Unit 3 automatically stopped. We endeavoured to restart the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System but failed." BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0317: The Tepco statement adds: "In order to fully secure safety, we operated the vent valve to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessels (partial release of air containing radioactive materials) and completed the procedure at 8:41AM." BBCBreaking at Twitter said: 0330: With all the focus shifting to the nuclear crisis and the rescue mission, it's worth remembering that Japan is still experiencing powerful aftershocks. Hirofumi Yokoyama from Japan's meteorological agency says: "Aftershocks are following, one after another, and in places that were hit hard by the earthquake, please be careful of aftershocks because there are dangers of further deterioration of the conditions of houses." I'm gonna take a break for a while. Pandemonium.Spicyryan said: Cerberus.Liandaru said: Can we quit with the shitty meme's? Definitely too soon for that. This is supposed to be an informative thread. Oh please, it is a discussion. If people want pure inform then they should go to the Twitter and ***everyone is posting this from. i probably just shouldn't have said anything. Just me personally, I think we can do without the crap jokes on the subject. Wow, jumping in here really late, but...are there seriously people who are saying Japan got what it deserved because it's not a Christian nation??
I mean, SERIOUSLY??? *Headdesks repeatedly* Asura.Silvaria said: Wow, jumping in here really late, but...are there seriously people who are saying Japan got what it deserved because it's not a Christian nation?? I mean, SERIOUSLY??? *Headdesks repeatedly* Yeah, that and Pearl Harbor. Refer to this thread on what that got someone: |
