It could just be sensationalist hooey though. An "Explosion" sound could be caused by a lot of things, and they might just be venting more steam to ease pressure.

Meh even the "official source" wont be completely trust worthy. They tend to release the least amount of info on there plants and what happens to them of pretty much any country. Bah looking for a quote but I remember awhile back about a fire in a plant and they initial press releases were all fubered... unfortunately very hard to find right now given the current situation lol

Well background is never 0. Average exposure is around 240ish mrem a year.

Anyways if you happen to be just hanging out within a couple of miles of it you probably got the equivalent of an X-ray. I think they long term studies from TMI showed like only at most 1-2 people above average in the miles around it got cancer over there lifetime

I can't help but think of Square-Enix.

The simple fact that they have to "Investigate" it is, probably more telling than anything else. If it wasn't something bad, I'd think they'd just come out and say that, yeah?

Bleh can't find the full thing but iirc awhile back there was a fire that turned out to be in like an AC unit at a plant and the iirc the initial reports were along the lines of there is a fire not sure where we're pretty sure there is no radiation leak :).

Let's just say I don't read too much into japan initial reports anymore

Meh looking it up there have been several problems in the past in japan caused by earthquakes and people usually freaked and things went on like normal

I wouldn't assume that. Not after this long after they established some form of pressure control and cooling... also even if it was which building?

I seriously doubt that the reactor caused 1/4 of the building to go missing. Steam explosions of that magnitude require some serious power excursions. Like 10X normal full power. Not slow build up of pressure from decay heat of a full shut down reactor. Something like that would cause some weak link part to fail before pressure climbed too high. Certainly bad inside but not omfg. Unless of course previous reports were outright lies lol

Looking at Bloodhunter's video, there was definitely an explosion and it definitely completely demolished a building. You can see the supporting walls blown away in chunks.

I don't think it's safe to think we have any idea what's going on in there anymore.

That's definitely a meltdown.

Also, in the video, it's almost surreal, the amount of energy it had to have taken to cause such a catastrophic and instantaneous failure.

Radiation levels aren't really that much of a concern if you get even just a few miles away. Fallout of contiminents on the otherhand...
