2009: The World Nuclear Association said pressure inside the containment of Reactor 1 at Fukushima-Daichi had been steadily increasing over the time that its emergency core cooling systems had not been active. The Tokyo Electric Power Company reported at 0200 local time (1700 GMT) that pressure had increased beyond reference levels, but was within engineered limits, the WNA added.

That's... kinda good news. It's within an acceptable threshold for repairs and attachments to be made. Good that aid got there on time.

They're going to release radioactive vapor from the reactor at Fukushima.

Eh don't get too far ahead. Anything could go wrong at this point. They could get hit with another aftershock/full-on quake before they're done and really screw the pooch.

What exactly does that mean? Will the air become toxic?

Ugh that's not good. Can't sustain that pressure for much longer so it has to release the radioactive gases huh? I really hope it's containable at least.

I can't afford to be a cynic at this time as much as it's within my nature to be one under typical circumstances ._.

Basically yes. They're releasing a small portion of radioactive gas into the atmosphere. It won't be enough to cause serious damage once it filters up into the atmosphere but anything near the vents will die off.

Oh ***.. I really hope they weren't in service. But I'm pretty sure everyone knows better and they'd be put out of commission til all of this crap gets cleared up.

Ya, I don't know how big of a long-term environmental effect it'll have, but they started evacuating people from Fukishima about 30mins to an hour ago just in case they needed to go through with this. It's official, now, though: they're doing it. =/

2036: David Abraham, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations based in Tokyo, writes in the New York Times: "Despite some serious damage in Tokyo, we were far more fortunate than those further north, who suffered a devastating tsunami in addition to the quake. As I reflect on the day's events, I have an eerie feeling that this was some sort of a trial run. Those of us in Tokyo, I fear, are still waiting for our big one."

I heard about this first thing this morning.
I'm saddened =(

My Japanese prof was worried throughout today's class about her relatives.
The Japanese exchange students were a bit worried but they said their families aren't near the target zones (tho I don't know if they knew about the Tsunami).

I hope things aren't as bad as expected. I read on Sankaku that many Otaku's figuring collections broke badly (with pictures of course).

Now, this makes you wonder how many Japanese kids were playing Pokemon at the time and used "Earthquake" or "Magnitude" seconds before the real earthquake. Prolly would scar them.

2043: The 6.7-magnitude earthquake which struck Niigata prefecture at 0400 on Saturday (1900 GMT on Friday) caused landslides and avalanches, police have said. The Kyodo news agency said there were no immediate reports of casualties after the tremor, which was followed by an almost equally strong one in the same area about 45 minutes later. The quakes struck in the west of the main island of Honshu, on the Sea of Japan coast.
