Looking to grow one of my sub-teams from 6 to 10 for Live platform development, at the SNS gaming division of Disney Interactive Media Group.
Dunno if we have any programmers lurking on these forums, but thought I'd post the openings regardless. Looking to fill these ASAP, preferably within the next 4-6 weeks.
All openings are in San Diego (Solana Beach), relocation mandatory but expenses covered. Full benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k, etc.) Highly competitive salaries.
Senior Web Developer - Back end services, secure API layer development, authentication, needs strong background in scalability, familiarity with NoSQL solutions. Also strong web design skills for developer customer tools portal. Experience leading small sub-groups of programmers and managing independent projects.
Server/Platform Developer - C/C++ server / platform programmer for developer customers. Supports platform feature requests for remote game development studios with Live products. Strong background in scalability to millions concurrent. Good network programming skills. Eye towards efficiency and maintainability. Experience with embedded scripting languages (Lua) and Java a plus.
Flash Client Developer - Core AS3/Flex rendering engine developer able to implement feature requests for remote game studios with Live products. Lots of experience with rendering optimization, and familiarity with advanced effects, tweening, and particle systems. Experience with other browser-based engines (Unity, Molehill, WebGL) and/or Java a plus.
These are mid-to-senior level gaming positions, not entry-level. 3-5+ years of professional experience required, or demonstrable equivalent. I'll have junior positions open in the coming months, but not right now.
Please don't post any personally identifiable information here, but if you're interested, poke me over PM with resume or demos.

They sound like really nice positions.
Also, I'd second the locking it motion myself.

That being said, I think there are a few programmers in this lot. Hopefully you'll fill those positions quickly.

Serious question.
People of older generations constantly say how you can't make a living working as a programmer or any of that because there's not many jobs and too many people in the field.
How realistic is that? I'm still young and have no idea what to major in, so getting actual input on this would be nice.

I find it great that you are putting this option out for the community Jaerik.
Kudos to you on that.

Of course, it depends a great deal on what you program, and your options in where you want to work.

They are full of ***.. plain and simple.
I am founder of Guildwork and I decided to go get a job for daytime since Guildwork isn't generating revenue yet. I sent out my resume to 5 places and within 6 hours I had 4 interviews lined up. One of the interviews was within 2 days and they instantly sent me plane tickets. Few days later I signed a contract for a 6 figure job with full benefits and I don't even have a college degree.
It really depends where you want to work because if you look within tech hubs such as San Francisco then you will quickly find out that they are desperately looking for engineers and can't find enough. The catch is they are looking for engineers that keep up with the quickly evolving technologies and practices, which is why all the old engineers tell you otherwise because they are stuck in their old ways.
One thing I can tell you is that it is very hard to make a living as a software engineer if it's something you choose because of money. It's truly something you have to enjoy so much that you do spend all your free time on it if you could.
P.S. If you posted this earlier I so would have applied for the Senior Web Developer position =(

Too bad my programming knowledge is ... minor compared to what you need :x
Would definitely be a nice change of venue but since your looking for more senior staffing... :(
I do hope you get lucky with finding someone though :)

I have my masters degree in programming and don't regret a minute of it, even when I get my monthly student loan bill.
Jaerik where were these positions 5 months ago when I was between jobs?? :) If I didn't like my current job so much I would consider it.

It also depends on how good you are. You can and will be replaced, so don't suck.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still at the point of trying anything and everything to see if I like it. Will look in to options to try out programming (past the dabbling I did in highschool online classes) when I can.
Just hit a dead spot in college currently so I'm trying to venture out and try out anything I can.

This hurts me a bit. I'm studying to be a programmer at the moment and I can't help but feel at times that I'm not grasping everything that's going on. It may have to do with that my current professor makes everyone feel like a dumb *** for asking questions though >_>

/Sigh I keep asking my self why I went to school for Human Services/Occupational Management(Minor-Biblical Studies).
/Cry...Oh'thats right that was a choice I made before the world got a hold of me and made me jaded.
Good Luck Jaerik, hope you find a good lot of folks for the positions.

That's reassuring... I just graduated 2 weeks ago with a 4 year degree in Software Engineering. Programming, web design, and the like have been hobbies of mine for years and something I do for fun. I'm trying to put a lot of the stuff I learned into practice so I'll have an easier time getting hired or once I get a job. I'm sure I'm not going to be able to sit down and just make something like this or the Guildwork site, but I certainly have the interest in making some projects using newer technologies, mainly with web based stuff, to get a better grasp on it all. Post graduation jitters I guess...
What you said about the money I completely agree with though. I had an easier time with my classes because I loved what I was doing... I found it fun rather than frustrating when something didn't work quite right and I had to figure it out. While other classmates were pulling there hair out and not really willing to work to solve the problem, then you ask them why they chose a field they have no understanding of, and you got the one word answer of "money".
Anyway I won't be applying for these as I don't qualify, but I will be looking for something more entry level within the next few months. I have some traveling coming up as well as trying to study and expand my knowledge/refresh myself and make sure I'm up to date before I really start hunting. Again I'm paranoid as to "what if I don't quite know this or that"... I also need to spend less time watching anime and playing video games and actually do some work >.>

This ^
I started programming with QBASIC when I was 10~ and, after quickly realizing its limitations, moved on to C. I love programming, I've used more languages than I can count now and its still exciting to learn something new every time.
Unfortunately instead of going to college for it, I joined the Navy straight out of High School and spent 6 years operating nuclear reactors instead. ><
However that is going to pay off since now there is something called the Post-9/11 GI Bill that is allowing me to go to college for free and get paid a housing allowance of ~$1700 a month ontop of my school being paid for.
Seems I've gone out on a bit of a tangent, point was Stanislav couldn't have said it better. The technologies you will use and develop for change at such a rapid pace, you do have to truly enjoy it to make it.

Just wanted to get clear on this, I've always heard it was hard to get around as a software engineer, but as you told me about your smooth applications and VERY benificial job you got out of it, I was wondering why in your case it went so easy?
Or am I just confusing things up and did you not apply to a position within the field that's being discussed?

I never thought about getting a SharePoint job, because it was simply something else I maintained. Now here I am working as a SharePoint Content Manager because a company recruiter noticed it in the midst of my resume. Apparently it's a decently growing field. Hoping I can get myself into the development side of things once I school myself up.

Ahh, was about to say. Wheres the funds come from. I'm working on my resume as we speak. Factory jobs pay the best around my city unless your super lucky and land a very special job (without a degree) but even then you usually always have to have 3+ years in the field to even be considered. IMO its like no one even wants to train people anymore.

Programming for a living has been and always will be a dream of mine. B.S. in Computer Science, even a B.A. in mathematics.
My school sucked at getting me an intern position, as it was mainly a liberal arts college.
The problem is experience plain and simple. It never helps that I can pick up any and all programming languages very quickly, all they want to see is experience. Took me about an hour to pick up HTML and perl scripting while I used to work at a junkyard doing ebay and internet sales. Made all home made applications that would search though our inventory for people to look for auto parts and request them.
It kills me when my friend asks me programming questions when they are going for a masters in robotics for disabled people (I forget the actual term right now). My friend was in the paper about how he reprogrammed PS3s to help people with Cerebral Palsy. Never any recognition for the go to guy :(
