Could never get it to work, most likely for lack of effort. I don't use a lot of .dat mods in FFXI either, I just prefer the original for the most part.

I'd have to say Cactuar too, but that may partially be because I really can't think of many "recurring" monsters that are exclusive to Final Fantasy and not just every RPG game. There's like Moogles, Chocobos, and Cactuars, and that's it.

Because insulting people who don't like something is so much better.

Nope. Don't do a remake. The fanbase will never be satisfied. The stereotypical raving fans will automatically love it more because it's VII, and the people who automatically hate the game due to the raving fans will automatically hate it more. And then you'll have the people in the middle who will hate very minor things that are changed, whether it be inadvertent or intentional. The small fraction of gamers who actually play games and rate them in a fair fashion will be too few to make any difference.

It'll be just like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. On release day, it's simply a matter of "it's all over but the b'awwing."

Besides, gamers can't handle linearity in RPGs anymore. Attention span is... too short. >.>

The problem with this, is that even if they don't use the same name from RPG to RPG, there are still similar enemies in other games. You got me on Tonberry and magic pots, but hundreds of games have featured giant flying eyes, Beholders, and slimes, and animated bombs and writhing masses of tentacles as an enemy and giant living flowers, well I can go on but you get the point.
