I'll agree that most, if not all FF titles really don't require a remake at all. They are masterpieces within their own original works. To remake is almost to say that the first wasn't good enough, and we need a digital facelift to make it better (ie: Better graphics, eased difficulty), which quite frankly is not the case at all. If anything, it makes it worse.
But if it's not got HD graphics and whiney voice overs it's not good worth playing!!!
If we can mitigate the introduction of a target audience that doesn't deserve to enjoy things beyond a superficial level, then I count that as a passive blessing.
my thing is that it's lose lose if they did an HD Remake
Lose 1. Don't change enough, new people will be turned off by the dated feel of the game, Casuals will be turned off that there really isn't anything new past pretty graphics. Will appease the Hardcore fans but will lose money.
Lose 2. They change too much to appeal to new people in hopes of making money back, will piss off casual fans of FF7 and Hardcore Fans alike.
I'm just saying, no matter how much nostalgia vision clouds some people, a HD Remake really isn't the best idea for SE or the Fans, just trust me
Dated feel of the game? I don't understand how remaking a game with better graphics makes a better game, I never have understood this stance and never will, the unique graphical style and beautiful music are defining characteristics of the FFVII experience. Imagine if the soundtrack was to be 'modernised' and replaced with ridiculous indy metal rap bs ala FFXIII-2.
Oh just the thought of hearing a heavy metal cosmo canyon rap makes me cringe...

Dated doesn't mean bad, it means dated :P
with skyrim and western RPGs getting more and more J-RPGs are being almost demonized.
do you want to see a more 'Western Appealing' version of FF7? I sure as F' don't.
cause a HD Remake would be expensive, like needing to break several million units to make money expensive. And you don't make that by appealing to the hardcore, it's the sad state of gaming atm.
Want a Good example of this? look at Ninja Gaiden 3, they made it more to 'Appeal to a western audience' and it's a bastardization for everything NG stood for.
Also I like how they say 'Appeal to Western Audiences' which is a nice way of saying "Let's dumb this ***down to get some of that sweet sweet casual gamer money"
In the end I think expectations for a FFVII re-release would be pretty hard to meet. But I'd still be a fan of seeing it happen. I used to look at Nintendo and wonder why they just release Mario game after Mario game with very little change to the formula.
But then I realize they really aren't making "New Super Mario Bros." so that I can play it, they're making "New Super Mario Bros." so that 10 year olds with a Wii now get into the series.
An FFVII remake, or even a re-release like this can give people an opportunity to enjoy/experience it who maybe didn't have a chance in the 90's for whatever reason (age etc.). So I look at this release and I just hope it helps get some other people into the series who hadn't played it previously.

It's one thing to make newer editions of a platforming game like Mario, and spruce it up with a slightly modded story, new power ups, added gameplay features and altered objectives. But it's a whole different story to re-release a JRPG that is within it's own sense of containment and is sensitive to any manipulation to it's foundation; most importantly, the story. Final Fantasy is simply not something that can be easily rebooted, as it would taint the very thing that put the remake into consideration. Meanwhile it's much easier to make vague connections and make new stories to a more "adventure" like franchise, such as Zelda or Mario.

once again I have to say: put in all the options, if you're going to do it do it right, and if people can chose how they want to play it, they'll be more happy.
some will want to play without voices, some will want to play with, some will want to play with new areas/bosses/enemies, some won't.

Re-releasing for PC... with online features and stuff.
The minimum requirements seem way *** high for a PlayStation 1 game, so it's either a HORRIBLE PORT or something else is going on...
MINIMUM SPECS
2GHz processor
1GB RAM
DirectX 9-compatible video card
Not HUGE requirements by any stretch... but still quite high for such an old game.
oh holy ***i'm about 3 pages late, ignore this.
they're probably taking into account the higher specs required for the OS, and to work with the modern OS, also hopefully they added widescreen support.
I may still use my old version, depending on how much they change, I would however like to see an 8 rerelease.
People have made tons of mods for the original PC release, HD texture packs, HD character models, improved music/cgi, new spells/monsters/battle mechanics, hardcore mode etc!
I don't imagine they'll add stuff to the game that can top what mod makers have done in the past
but i came across something just a moment ago, something about Tetsuya Nomura revealing a top secret highly demanded title to be brought to light in 2011, i believe it was in a press conference in december. alot of people were speculating it was the final fantasy VII remake that millions of people were begging for, or for KH3. I personally dont know if it would be for KH3 since we kind of knew about it already thus fore go the "top secret". thoughts?
