Like for most things. Didn't know how to make a Reuben before I was given instructions. I personally wouldn't want all my torrents bloated with stupid readmes, nor would I take the time to add them for common computer knowledge, if somebody isn't smart enough to figure out what a disc image file is, then they shouldn't be torrenting. Then you get these 10, 20, 50 page discussions on the torrent pages of people confused on how to do it, and people will claim they got it to work doing this then others don't have the same experience cause the guy didn't include everything he did. Then comes in someone that writes detailed instructions on how to do it and people are forced to bump the instructions every few pages so people can find it easier. When all the guy had to do was spend 3 minutes to be thoughtful. Asking here is almost exactly the same thing as using google to research. But you generally need to know what you're going to need to research to research something. I have no problem with him asking for help, I'm ripping on the idea that a readme file is necessary in each and every torrent. that's what you don't get. Siren.Kalilla said: » eh, plenty of jackasses do that anyways. When all the guy had to do was spend 3 minutes to be thoughtful. I find that if people can't figure it out, then they probably shouldn't be using it. I say this while I'm sending somebody a torrent to download something while I told him what to do just about for each step... trial and error and problem solving are skills people need to spend more time nurturing and using, I don't find a readme is necessary fore something as simple as a compressed file or a disc image, as they are very standard things in the computer world. Then again some people need help saving a word document... Lies!
Paint it green and stuck on some green ribbons and its exactly the same thing I was kinda following the whole "it's common computer knowledge" thing. Took it you were implying he shouldn't have needed any help at all. Sorry. :|
You're acting like the ReadMe would be a huge file though. Your instructions from the previous page were 1 KB. Deleting it would take a second at most. Neither do I.
Until I started emulating games, an ISO wasn't relevant to anything I used a computer for. I don't make a habit of learning things I wont be using or I'm not particularly interested in. And even after I started emulating, most emulators don't require the ISO to be mounted, so yeah. :| On break at wooork!!

I just don't agree with it. No, I think that people who are torrenting should know these things, that if they don't they shouldn't be torrenting, as if they don't know these basic things they probably don't know how to keep themselves safe while torrenting and are opening themselves up to a lot of problems. the ability to troubleshoot/learn are skills all people on computers should have though... I don't like contributing to people's helplessness. to each there own though. Ragnarok.Raenil said: » Neither do I. Wait, what? lol, no
You should not expect people to know what a file extension means. That is why there are websites that tell you in detail what each one does. If you're gonna download ***you should at least be able to google how to install w/e you download. Googling isn't even difficult yet some people can't even do that

I expect a lot of people to, but at the very least people should understand what a file type is, and that there are differences (probably not memorize what they are) and be able to look up what they are if they need to know. I all the time have to look up certain extensions when I run across a new file type, or if I'm trying to figure out what the *** something is, I help a coworker at work with it all the time and he's been in the business for decades. and even 1k files add up if you have millions of them. I always search the answer on google

Googling isn't even difficult yet some people can't even do that sorry but don't agree, maybe for a severely complicated install, or some hacks, but not for simple "extract this with a program that can extract files" "mount this with a program that can mount disc images" it's a waste of their time, and ours really, it's only contributing to the ignorance of people... If you don't hold someone's hand when it comes to this stuff they'll learn to look things up for themselves and try to figure it out. Eventually they won't need readme files anymore.
You two be careful, y'all might break Sagi's feeble mind with that kinda talk.

Eventually they won't need readme files anymore. You have to consider that everyone that downloads has different levels of experience with doing this. Some people are just starting out and want to download a PS1 game they played years ago and don't know what to do. If they had a readme file they wouldn't of had to look up what an ISO is, what it's for, how to use it, then find out what daemon tools is and how to play ps1 games. A readme file would of fixed that instantly and they would of learned how to do it in less time. Not everyone wants to be someone knowledgeable about computers, and all they want is a quick fix and move on. You shouldn't' criticize those types of people just because they don't spend as much time on a computer as you do. |
