I'm sure that was intended to be rhetorical or at least general in nature, but on the whole, psychologically-speaking cognitive dissonance and rationalisation goes a long way as a coping strategy to avoid the human feeling of inner turmoil or anxiety. :p Probably a long way away from that still, I'd think. ^_-
