I say mean things to morning people too. >_>; Asura.Dominate said: » My sister told me I had so much energy it was disgusting. So what if I was singing and dancing at 10 this morning! Usually it happens when the sky starts to get light outside, which is a bit after 6AM this time of year. XD But lately, I've just been happy. ;x You happy people and your reasons to be happy. :|
(Okay, so I'm pretty happy too since the kiddo is around, but still!) ((And okay, maybe I'm just playing about being unhappy about people being happy.)) as long as you are happy who cares :P
What would be the easiest/cheapest method of getting the stuff off my wife's HDD from her dead computer?
The drive itself is fine, but it's a slimline PC and the PSU went out, it's kinda outdated anyways so she's getting a new one.. I know there are a few different ways I could go about getting the stuff off, just what is the easiest and cheapest to do? Hmm... Could at least try Error Checking it? Open up "Computer" > Right click the HDD > Properties > Tools tab > Error Checking button. Rarely works but you never know. Did you go ahead and install all the updates available and check your drivers for your HDD and all that stuff? I get errors trying to download updates for windows. I've tried doing that before, I couldn't ever get it to work, something about the drive being in a 'strange computer' it wouldn't boot or nothing. I'm too lazy to go through a bunch of ***, which is why I said easiest.

I'm too lazy to go through a bunch of ***, which is why I said easiest. You don't have to boot it from yours, plug it into a slot and treat it as a storage drive. You can either transfer the files to your PC, or wait till she gets a new one then open file sharing and send all her files to the new one.
Even if it's slimline, if you have a dual-IDE cable (assuming it's IDE and not SATA):
You can just hook them both up. But being slimline, that would mean having to extend the cable outside of the case and building a case around her old HDD. (Basically, turning the internal HDD into a makeshift external one). Or, just find an old full-size case and transfer everything into that. (Probably the easier way, unless you LOVE that slimline case.) EDIT: Or what Dread said. He always beats me to these things! It is SATA
Oh cool, Firefox won't let me + people ; ;
I hate this PC now. Did you update Java and all that already? Valefor.Slipispsycho said: » It is SATA I'd just go with Dread's idea. As long as your PC or her new one has space for a second HDD, it shouldn't be an issue to hook it up and use it as a slave drive for storage. I really need to get up to date with hardware stuff. My old PC was from 2001, so my mind still revolves around "IDE ALL the things!" Still no [+]ing after downloading Java :<
I have pizza so I don't feel TOO bad, but man, did not think a simple Windows reinstall a week ago would turn into all these problems. ; ; Valefor.Slipispsycho said: » It is SATA Talk with a local PC supply shop, see if you can't find a SATA to USB or something. You'll still need a power source though... I'd suggest using an old PSU of a different computer, not the one you're on now if you can. I bought a sata/ide combo to usb awhile back, think it ran me maybe $15... Shouldn't be too expensive. And you probably couldn't slave it straight up, you have to tinker with something to slave most hdd, but I don't recall off the top of my head what you have to change is called. Should be on the hdd somewhere though, like a sticker. Alexander.Drokin said: » You happy people and your reasons to be happy. :| (Okay, so I'm pretty happy too since the kiddo is around, but still!) ((And okay, maybe I'm just playing about being unhappy about people being happy.)) Damn you, happy people. I used to use a PC with two HDs hooked up, but that was IDE too. Would boot off the main one and was still able to store stuff on the 2nd drive.
