I worked for jackson hewitt long ago, they said if someone was pretty much elderly or an adult that didn't work all year long and you took care of them, yes u can claim them.

that's why the question of "Can someone else claim you on their tax return?" is on our returns too

A lot of mine is due to jumping a tax bracket or something due to the amount of overtime I did. I also didn't change the paperwork for them to take more money out of each paycheck for fewer dependents (wife and step-son left early enough in the year that I can't claim them). Next year will be better, and I will most likely get $2k+ back. I alternate paying 3k and getting back 3k. It's stupid.
