been watching American Gods a bit. Mixed opinions on the show overall but I do really enjoy the mix of all the various theologies and mythologies in one conflict.
Did you read the book?

Its even better. The books always are.

American Gods the graphic novel is a great read, and Neil Gaiman's second best work after Sandman.

(*)Almost always better

Silo and House of the Dragon notable examples of show is better than the book. HotD is like reading a damn history book it's terrible.

Hot take? Invincible is better than the comic. (I'm really not a graphic novel kinda guy though, so)

Then sometimes shows are based on books, but they catch up because GRRM writes so god awfully slow.

There once was a fella named Jon.
*alright, time to sleep for 35 decades*
Then everyone died.

When Robert Jordan died with WOT unfinished I was pretty unhappy with how Sanderson finished it. But with passage of time, I think he did a good job and having that closure of finishing it one way or another was quite valuable.

I don't think that is in the cards for ASOIAF, sadly.

My friend recommended Silo to me and I tried the audio book. I made it about 2 hours before I couldn't take any more of that author's writing. Every single thing was described with no less than 3 adjectives.
i.e. "The rusty old creaky door" "The dark damp cold hallway" "The dilapidated well worn dirty stairs" Not actual examples, but just making a point.

I even had my wife listen to about 15mins of it, but I lead her into it with her thinking I just wanted her to check out this new book. After like 15mins she said "this writing is horrible".

I can agree with that.

Im definitivelly a more visual consumer, and it really hurts me keeping my short attention span in a book reading.

If an author cant make it worth every single word, hardly they will keep me motivated.

Back when I had literature classes, there was an old school called "parnasianismo", which rule was "art by the art", or in other words, it was fair game neglecting the message and focus only in the form.

From that school that lots of texts like you mentioned: excessive descriptive, excessive words, like the arts value was just something sounding good, and not meaningful.

As someone who enjoy recaps, a text who focus more on events and characters/narrator thoughts seems more appealing

The show was crazy good. So good that after it ended I read all 10 books cause I didn't want to wait 3 years for season 2.

Seconded, silo the show is crazy good.

Altered carbon otoh, books are far far superior to the show. Only first season of TV show is worth watching.

Any sites you all like for book recommendations? I know of goodreads. Fantasy and sci-fi series, the longer the better.

Altered Carbon season 1 was amazing. I'll have to check out the books, I enjoyed the story.

S2 had all the signs of "insert idiot in suit because last season made money". Not being able to recast Joel Kinnaman definitely didn't help.

...It is surprisingly difficult to find book recommendations.

People don't *** read anymore.

Never even heard of Project Hail Mary for example, ridiculously good book.

The only way I seem to ever get book recommendations is someone sees me with a book and they say "have you read"

Or Finding a movie or a show you like and then reading the book after. Google "books like" or "top books in the genre"

I mostly go by reviews than recommendations. And I follow all work by particular authors, and have read all their stuff because I like their writing style.

My favourite scifi author is Iain M. Banks of The Culture series books. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer a few years ago.

For fantasy, Steven Erikson among others. Huge novel style book series.

Switching gear sorta, The Boys having HEAVILY deviated from the comics has 2 episodes (2 hour finale) to wrap up a TON of ***. Throwing out filler like they've got another season to add. They don't.

Does not seem like it's going to accomplish that. They could do it, if they go full comic ending.

This is the problem. These idiot "writers" think they have to deviate from the source material because they can do it better. I've lost count of how many shows have had people come out and just say the writing team doesn't respect the source material. Witcher is probably the biggest example of that.

If they were such "good writers" then maybe they should be creating original works. /sipstea

Daredevil S2 ended well enough. It really relies on the suspension of disbelief, like a lot, but it did enough to make me look forward to S3. I would rather have had one other character killed off but oh well. Punisher next week!

Not always. For instance Murderbot the show was WAY longer than the book, actually a novella. So they added stuff that wasn't in the book. Also in the books Murderbot is the PoV character and stuff that it does not see, or download, is not in the story. So some of the added stuff is other character's experiences, handy for advancing the story and padding it out.

Way different than the usual OMG what can we cut without ruining the story of most book adaptations.

Oh right, I forgot Anthony Mackie is good in Twisted Metal

Have to give him that one. That's more of his lane. Non-serious B stuff.

Everything I've seen so far of The Boys is leading to a scorched earth comic book ending. I'm all for it.

Every time Starlight is on screen I have to double check wtf that is though. What did she do to her face, she was so pretty before.

Advertising again The Sandman series. Truly a 1 for 1 translation of the graphic novels to TV, down to the spitting image MC from the novels.
