They already are the same thing. Just one has Windows and the others have a locked proprietary OS. Hardware wise, they are nearly identical to a low end gaming PC now.

BUT.... If your old phone is REALLY old and you are not going to switch carriers for 2 - 3 years look into it. Last year's model refurbished is probably the better choice in that event anyway.

no licensing crap, no internet signals needed, and if I tried to change it to USA region anyway all the music would be unplayable since it was downloaded in Canada, apple doesnt let it be played if the device changes region settings lol

The department i joined in seems fun, but also worrisome.
Worrisome because i will be allocated in a project that aim to replace a commercial solution for a specific one built by the team.
This experience isnt new to me, and nowaday it feels like a underestimation of a tested solution in favor to a “free” one.
Because my department isnt even focused in development per se: sounds like they already spent 1 year and not even delivered a MVP.
Im sure this will be a big challenge with very high risk for the entire team.
My biggest problem with this though, is that this challenge came too early to me. My current skills arent ready to garantee success for such project
