I definitely agree (and stated early in this vein) that automation is the solution to stop defining menial work as "a livable wage". I'd much rather see huge advancements in automation result in elimination of such jobs and people can move to either their passions or at least rewarding work to make a living.

The cool thing about that is such a renaissance would allow for huge growth again. Imagine if everyone had enough free time to contribute their own art and inventions to the world because they don't need to work 60-hour weeks just to pay rent <3

Automation gets people out of shitty jobs. And into good jobs.

That's the (*) that people always forget to mention.

Sure, warehouse pays $15 an hour... but it's a shitty job. LET the shitty jobs disappear BUT (and this is the part that's always ignored) give those people better jobs.

No matter how much money a manufacturing job pays it should never be something you do your entire life.

Imagine being so stockholmed that you WANT to pick parts and pack boxes 40 hours a week. Instead of being paid to oversee a machine do it. (or coal mine or oil rig or meat packer et al)

I would comment on this minimum wage discussion but it comes WAY too close to politics.

It is almost impossible to have a discussion of economics without indulging in politics.

isn't the main incentive of automating to get the same or more amount of work done within less time and with less workers in order to cut costs and increase profits?

lets pretend for a moment that for every old job lost to automation there will be a new one created in monitoring and maintaining the machinery doing the automation, wouldn't the next logical step be to try and automate the monitoring and maintenance?

You can never fully take humans entirely out. Machines can't properly monitor and repair other machines (or themselves) ((yet))

That's a problem that won't be a problem till after we're all dead. Or retired (lol as if anyone reading this will ever be capable of retiring and not working themselves to death!)

So they can do that battle.

This is my jam.

It doesn't matter if a company can fully remove all humans from the process, unless governments allow industry to do whatever they want they will still need humans to monitor them. There are lots of rules imposed on businesses that they don't want imposed on them, it's not a choice. They are forced to comply to the rules.

With social media, MSM etc now it's incredibly easy to create scares and outrage if they tried this too, if some company went full automation certain groups could create mass uproar and boycotts etc This is laughably easy now and companies are more fearful of public anger than ever before.

Also as you move forward, new industries are created to take the place of the old. So even if some jobs are phased out completely, others will take their place.

Jobs that have been created this generation, that never existed before are things like Esports players, youtubers, streamers, the computer graphics industries for movies, video game developers among many others. As workers have more free time, entertainment industries grow larger.
