It needs to be a DD
Sam tank would fit FF as it's been based on mitigation and counter. Stupid to call it a stupid idea considering the past interpretations.

There were a few times back in the day (like, 2004, when leveling the job) that I got asked to tank on samurai in Japanese parties. I always felt like I was doing terribly compared to a paladin or ninja back then, but they always seemed quite pleased. I did what I could; exp parties on samurai were hard to come by back then.
It's strange when you consider that Samurai in FFs have changed in practically every iteration. I have to say, though, Bravely Default's version (Counter focused tank) is probably the style I prefer.
In FFXI though, I tank everything as RUN/SAM, and Seigan + Third Eye is incredibly useful against certain enemies or large groups. Having 75% PDT, super Phalanx, and 87% flat parry rate is nothing to scoff at either.

RUN is pretty legit. Or at least it was when I left. Epeolatry helps but is not necessary. I did some reasonable tanking of things on it at times.

I kinda hope that they make Samurai a DPS, and they give it all of Cyan's Sword Techs. Quadra Slice, Retort, Empowerer, all that ***. Even Cleave, and I hope they leave Cleave as instant death AOE.

There are a few NMs in particular where Third Eye is extremely satisfying to use. Blinking out Eagle Eye Shot spam from Warder of Courage (the level 150 Absolute Virtue) is probably my favorite. That, or the Soulflayer NM in Reisenjima that tries to make Darkness on you with Bloodrake (he puts up Azure Lore as a heads up so you don't even need Seigan, actually).
