If they don't want me to pay, they could at least stop sending me mass amounts of calls, texts, and emails.

Better question remains: Why is your area not taking advantage of the Sherman Antitrust Act and suing whoever is your ISP/Phone Carrier who is the only option from not allowing competition into your area?

Strictly speaking, the area I live in has coverage from all major providers.

It's the areas I travel to back home that are...limited.

It's just the way it is when you're in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes even Verizon doesn't have coverage. You're not understanding. It isn't that anyone isn't allowing competition. There simply aren't enough people there to make competing any sort of compelling business.
