Dubs are good for if you are casually watching it in the background, don't feel like reading, or trying to introduce new people to anime.

In some cases of like side characters, it makes them so much more enjoyable to listen too. Example: Steins;gate.
(I do not like the voice of Mayuri and Itaru in Japanese, their english dub makes them very bearable. also the dub makes Okabe as a character much more lovable.)

but; have you played the visual novel?

Was planning on it pretty soon tbh, i know the anime skips a lot, i was thinking on reading Steins;Gate: Aishin Meizu no Babel pretty soon. It's the same story from Kurisu's prospective.

There are only two dubs I have ever liked. Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. Can't stand any others myself. But I'm also not one to just stick anime on in the background. If I have anime playing I'm actively watching it.

Cause remember boys and girls, this is what happens when America is involved:

I will either split my attention 50/50(if the show is mindless like a sitcom/american cartoon), or I will turn my games off and watch it with 100% interest. Anime generally falls into the latter category, and whether it's dubbed or subbed makes no difference to me(exceptions of course being subs like DBZ subs or really early dub work where it's total ***).

I literally can't stand the whole subs > dubs mindset. Generally the subtitles aren't conveying what's actually being said, and sub quality differs just as much as dub quality based on who is dubbing it. I'm a sucker for conveyance over direct translation, and I bet even if I could understand Japanese I still wouldn't understand every joke or reference as it is outside my culture. A good dub(see Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy etc) will usually present the material with an accurate translation that also conveys the feeling that the anime director wants the viewer to have. You won't get that in a sub, because you don't understand the tone the words are being spoken in, unless you yourself know Japanese and have lived in Japan long enough to understand their tone. Like, sure, sometimes it's obvious given a situation and
given visuals, but even then a third of the time meaning/feeling is lost.

I have the game, just never did finish all the endings. game itself is very text/dialog heavy, which was enjoyable when they go into all the sci-fi jargon.


my problem with subs, is not if they are good or not. have enjoyed both, but more often than not, it depends on the setting of show.
my issue with it, is localization, editing, and unnecessary jokes.

I don't like how they change dialogue in some instances though (or music, dialogue and music in DBZ especially but I can watch it)

One of the actual worst dubs i've heard in recent years is Panty and Stocking & Garterbelts dub.
The acting isn't "Bad", it's more... the Background music, opening and ending, the LOT has been pitched up.
It's like they diddn't get the rights to the music on the English DVD release (Which i own), and just released it anyways with the music pitched. It's horrible. cause half the joy of that show is the music.

Also, Asia (English) release has been moved up to April 28th. Gives me a lot less time to get a PS4 than I'd hoped...
