Always baffles me when people can recognize all these anime characters, though I suppose some of them aren't anything specific, just random drawings. Just that so many of them seem incredible similar, but then I'm completely uninitiated in the world of anime.

there's a few shows you could watch that are shorter to see if you can get into it or not.

If you like mechs: Gundam 08th MS Team.

weird ***: FLCL

critically acclaimed: FMA Brotherhood. (not as short, but still great).

Yeah Fullmetal Alchemist is probably the best I've ever read and the anime adaption (brotherhood) is amazingly well done and follows the manga completely. No annoying filler aside from the first episode

The only thing I disliked about Brotherhood was Roy Mustang's voice not being the same. It was a lot better in the original Anime and the movie that went with it

Not so much in this case because it follows it completely, they didn't cut any corners when making it because the manga was almost finished when they started.
