Keep doing the village quests; you get the ability to recruit more Palicos during quests after you complete a few where you rescue some Palicos that get into trouble.
I haven't changed Byakko's armour yet. Gave him a scythe made from Nerscylla scraps though. Using the Mario/Luigi stuff feels like it'd be cheating considering how much better it is than everything else available right now. :x
