I have some students who don't give a *** about anything, and all I can think about is how I can help them change that.

Sadly, a lot of the teachers here, especially at my middle school and elementary school, were just there for a check. One math teacher at my high school used to regularly send students out for the strangest ***. Of course I was sent out, as were about 6 others. The quiet girl who always followed the rules, was always cooperative eventually showed up, we never found out why.

EDIT: Should also add, none of us really got in trouble, the dean just shook her head and told us to wait for the bell and go to our next class, saying that the teacher "must be on a war-path again."

It's a grim reality, but chances are they never will legitimately care and may not even be there by the end of the year. You can't "give" grades, but you can find incentive to make them earn them even if they are just passing. Case-by-case deal though, different for everyone.

Sauce: I was an apathetic student and also worked in the dean's office once I didn't need to stay the entire day due to my credit count.

My strategy is to be honest and open with these kids, applying real world application to the stuff I'm teaching them. If they can't find it in themselves to care about the world around them, then that's on them. It's a damn shame, but I can't make those horses drink.

EDIT: By the way, don't give your students candy regularly, it's a bad idea. >.>
