And these things taste decently good, however, they also do not add anything of substance to your hungry belly. Sometimes croutons are scattered on top. The definition of a crouton is a stale piece of bread that someone forgot to give to the birds. To make croutons, you dice a loaf of bread into small squares. You then leave the squares out on the counter for a few days. When they are hard, dry, and stale, you have accomplished croutons. In order to disguise the hard staleness of the croutons and the tastelessness of the lettuce, a dressing is usually applied to the top. This dressing is generally a fatty affair. Since the point of torturing yourself with salad is to avoid fat and calories, the dressing effectively defeats the purpose. Skip the salad. Have a steak and some potatoes. You won't regret it!
