Playing through Skyrim for my first time as a Mage, getting killed a lot, had to resort to conjuration and hide in the corner tactics. Anyone have any advice?

Taking donations for a new computer and/or keyboard. Can't even play support properly because my keyboard doesn't seem to register strokes anymore, and lag gets everyone killed. And I just want to freaking plasm farm, gawsh!
