You could have your starter ship be exactly like it! All the parts are Centaur-class, except the... bit... whatever it's called... not the saucer, nacelles or pylons... the rollbar bit... that's Miranda-class. :|

Aye, I am looking at a Miranda Class behind my Andorian at log in screen, well I did.

Each ship has to have a different name, unfortunately. Even though you can have letters at the end of the registry number (which you can also change). :/ Unless you get rid of the older ship; then you can reuse the name. :x
But... you can only choose the name/registry when you first get the ship; after that you have to buy rename items from the cash shop.
Also, Shuttles and other small craft have their own names, so gotta be careful of those names, too.

You get a free ship of your choice whenever you get a promotion (every 10 levels). More ships are unlocked as you get to higher ranks.
You can also buy ships with Dilithium (usually not worth it), or buy ship requisitions off the exchange (some are pretty good and cheap, like the Mirror Universe Patrol Escort). And when we eventually get an FFXIAH Fleet going, we'll be able to buy them from our own Starbase. :p
Also, some of the better ships are in the cash shop, but few of them really measure up to the top-tier Fleet Starbase ships (although it will take us a loooong time to get our Starbase that high).

Oh, forgot to mention; you also get a free Ambassador-class support cruiser for completing the mission "Temporal Ambassador".

But it's about half way through the second episode arc, so don't expect to get it until you're at least lv20-25 or so. And that's if you only do story missions; you'll probably have access to better ships by the time you get it if you do every little mission you come across.

Also, don't bother actively farming equipment until you hit lv50; it's not worth it because drops are determined by your rank, so you'll just get stuff you're going to be ditching after a handful of missions. Just use whatever drops during your missions. ^^;
