I can agree, everything is perceived differently by everyone. But my entire muse was about the negativity, of being cocky, of being rude, of being... Well, negative in personality and presentation. Of treating others with inferiority. Even if you're right, there's a difference between criticism and insult. I commonly think arrogance comes with insult, not constructive criticism.
I found a good take on it, I think, that does seem to go hand in hand with others opinions here:
"Self confidence is important but without compassion and humility, it's just arrogance."
Something like that.

people tend to project their feelings onto others. one person's self-confidence can easily taken as an insult to a persons own confidence or lack thereof.

i know that i can come off as arrogant sometimes. it's definitely not the reason i'm single though. in general i'm pretty cocky, but i'm definitely harder on myself than anyone else could ever be.

I guess I personally just have gone through many experiences where I've not only treated others but been treated with arrogance, as well as other negative personality traits and I've come to find I don't like that characteristic in others and so I should not like it for myself.
Of course even I let my emotions get the best of me many a times still, but I don't think I'll ever find it right for me to ever, EVER justify those traits and just accept it for "who I am," when I can CHOOSE who I get to be (even as it's a constant reminder, having to practice, and reprimand myself for doing as I would not wish others to do.) And I'd rather be respectful, modest, etc. So I'll chastise myself for situations that I've reacted otherwise in. :/

i think arrogance more often than not is just a misunderstanding or clash of world views. i think everyone is arrogant at some point. the trick it to try to be more aware of your own faults than the faults of others. calling someone arrogant is a 'pot kettle black' thing in that, who are you to judge anyone else?
