how to give FFXI up
Take the three week challenge. I played this game daily since 2005. I missed so much life. Real life people. December 21 I took advantage of family coming for holidays. To my surprise after about 4 days of changing my pattern of playing at night I felt better. Now nearly a month and I realize the hold this game had on me. Next time I log ill be deactivating my account. No desire to return. Thanks for a great game SE. Unfortunately it does not go on forever. Thanks to all the friends I met. Time to move on. Ask yourself if you could take time off the game people. If you still love it after a couple weeks your set. But like a drug you have to remove it to control it.
But, yeah - I have stayed away from the game for awhile. I just stalk this forum for the lol's
I take about a week break or so every couple months...it varies though.
Just like anything else, you have to play in moderation. Of course the game is addicting where that concept can easily be thrown out the door, so its really up to your self-control to be able to balance life and game same time.
I personally still love this game. I have taken a few days/weeks vacation from it and when I come back, I feel like I've rediscovered new parts to the game. So good luck with you!! This game ain't crack.
Just saying... Phoenix.Kirana

People who think of a video game as an addiction are silly. It is much more akin to a hobby or a collection. Granted one may become obsessed with a hobby or collection to the point which it interferes with life, but if it makes one happy without interfering with the lives of others, there is nothing wrong about it.

Damn virgins who start playing this game. j/p

I used to play this game daily for HOURS upon hours. Then I got a job. Now I play on Sundays and Mondays. I play some during the day before work, but it's mainly to check my Auction House or something like that. On Sunday and Monday though, it's game time!
I can understand how some people call this game an addiction. Addiction by the meaning is something you do often that interfere's with your life and the interaction of others in your life. Wether it be drugs, gambling, or a video game it's all addiction. I mainly like the friends I meet on MMOs, the game itself gets boring pretty fast. When it feels like there's nothing but drama or your friends move on, it's not hard to put the game down. Grinding exp and losing rolls on gear gets sooooooo old. :x
I quit August 2nd, but still enjoy these forums. Good game, great people. :) Offline

The realization that made me quit FFXI:
500 days playtime. Translated into 8 hour work days, that's 1500 days. That's longer than it took me to finish my Bachelor's. I began to wonder what else I could have done with that time. What clinched it was this thought: I could have become fluent in 2 or 3 languages... maybe more. /depressed quit Edit: I do still log in occasionally to talk to friends and see what's new. I find it less tempting to come back when I don't cut myself off completely. Wombat said: The realization that made me quit FFXI: 500 days playtime. Though quite a bit of that was me AFK whilst at college or something. Take a job that requires you to travel.
- You won't have internet access all the time and when you do it might not be fast enough for FFXI. - Playing on a Laptop isn't a much fun. - Since you have to travel so much you'll spend most of your downtime resting/relaxing. When you DO feel like playing you won't have much time to invest in actual playtime. That's what happened to me. Get a girlfriend/boyfriend, or a baby. That seems to be 75% of the people I know who quit.
You guys are all small time. But in a more serious note, good luck in real life, I heard that game was a *** at times. Some people haven't quit because they still waiting on Byakko to drop their kitty pants. (

The way my priorities were aligned while I was spending that amount of time IG, I wouldn't have done anything else really productive. I had tons of fun and made lots of great friends. I truly don't regret the time I spent on FFXI at all, nor do I look down on those who still play. It was more of a realization that I couldn't justify spending another 500 days on a game, especially with how my priorities and values have changed. |
